OpenEverything.hk - HKDUG sandbox and Soholife.hk site rebuild with Drupal

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

We've talked about the idea of having a sandbox server where all of us can mess around & put what we've learned to the test. At our 2nd meeting, I had spoken about getting SOHOlife English Training Centre to sponsor HKDUG with their venue and their web space.

On Saturday, John and I had gone to check the place out and secured its availability for December 6th's OpenEverything.hk event. In return, John and I will migrate their existing horrendous flash site to Drupal. Our plan is replicate their site in Drupal in as little time as possible (while giving them a far better result than what they currently have), and present our experience in the OpenEverything event. We'll also put up a "how we rebuild SOHOlife" as tutorial here. This isn't just limited to John and I, any of you interested are welcomed to join.

I'm hoping that this will form a long term relationship between HKDUG and SOHOlife (and hopefully more will come). Anything we can do to spread awareness and knowledge of Drupal.

Please feel free to raise your ideas & concerns.

+1 interest to join.

Firstly, out of interest, what is the Open Everything event about and how is it connected to HKDUG? Secondly, I'd be glad to offer any help in the development of SOHOlife if needed.

For personal reasons I missed the 2nd meeting so not sure how far the sandbox idea went. But if the group needs a place to host this sandbox I'm more than happy to host it on my server. Let me know.

There is no connection between HKDUG and Open Everything HK other than the fact that I am a member of HKDUG and I'm organizing Open Everything HK.

Open Everything is an unconference in the spirit of 'open'. The HK event will be held on December 6, 2008 as will simultaneous events in Berlin, Germany and Madison, WI, USA.

I will post a formal announcement to the group soon.

Hi! John,

I try to e-mail you, but not success. Here is the translation for open everything.

Andy

Open Everything is a global conversation about the art, science and spirit of 'open'. It gathers people using openness to create and improve software, education, media, philanthropy, neighbourhoods, workplaces and the society we live in: everything. It's about thinking, doing and being open.

Where, and when?

There are two kinds of Open Everything conversation planned: five short events in cities around the world and a three day retreat in British Columbia and.

Centre for Social Innovation, Toronto, Canada - June 4, 2008 [read what happened]
Shuttleworth Foundation, Cape Town, South Africa - August 22, 2008 [read what happened]
Hollyhock, Cortes Island, BC, Canada - September 3 - 6, 2008 [read what happened]
Lien Centre for Social Innovation, Singapore - September 15, 2008
Young Foundation, London, England - November 6, 2008, Roundhouse [wiki]
A Berlin event has also been proposed for early December.
Eventually, we hope different kinds of Open Everything will happen all over the place. The idea is for people to pick it up and morph it. The events above should be a good start.

Why?

Open is changing the game. And, while Wikipedia and open source software offer great examples of what's up, we know that openness, collaboration and participation are spreading well beyond the realm of technology. It's about value, and values. Where open is headed is huge. Open Everything gathers people who are charting this trajectory.

Who?

Many of us are mashing-up different kinds of open. Open source. Open space. Open orgware. Openness is at the core of our businesses, organizations and networks. Open Everything is for us and by us: it's about connecting and looking under the hood of each others' projects, seeing how they tick, when they work and where they break. It's a about learning how to do open better, together.

What?

Each Open Everything event is different. Topics kicked up so far include: open business models; running participatory events; the art, science and meaning of open; speedgeek case studies; community engagement; taking open source thinking beyond the tech world; open train wrecks (what went wrong?). What actually gets discussed on the day depends on who shows up, and what they're passionate about.

Instigators

Mark Surman, Jason Mogus, David Eaves and Michael Lewkowitz starting kicking this idea around for Hollyhock in early 2008. Since then, Andrea Goetzke, Christian Ahlert, Helen King, Jonathan Gray, Philipp Schmidt, Sara Piteira, Sharifah Maisharah Binte Mohamed and Tonya Surman have gotten involved in organizing local events. Organizations helping us to make it all happen include Centre for Social Innovation in Toronto, the Lien Centre for Social Innovation in Singapore, New Thinking Network, the Open Knowledge Foundation, Renewal Partners, the Shuttleworth Foundation, the Social Innovation Exchange and Web of Change.
