Hi all
Please help!
User uploaded images (using TinyMCE/IMCE) keeps disappearing from the files/u.. folder as created by Drupal. The photo gallery appears to be fine, even though the photos are no longer present in the users folder, presumably the page is displayed from cache (mode normal).
Once another update is made to the site, as I did today, the photo gallery is totally broken, all images gone, presumably cache gets cleared due to the updating that was done.
Am I right in thinking that the apparently fine photo gallery was just displayed from cache? And that the page should have been recreated using the images in the users folder and cached anew?
And most desperately: when and why are the photos deleted from the users folder?? Some images are still present, some are just missing.
Running Drupal 5.10

Break it down...
I have no clue where your issue is but I can suggest a starting point... break the problem down!
For starters disable TinyMCE and try to work through the disappearing files issue first. Disable cache site wide to again make the problem less complicated.
Once doing these few things report back what you find and then there might be something that can be addressed.
Agree
Images don't just disappear from /files. Once uploaded, it has to be deleted.
Agree with Deezone, go back to basics, unable TinyMCE and use the IMCE link ("Insert image or link.") at the bottom of the editor to upload a picture. Do you see the IMCE upload window open up? If there were any previous images loaded by you, you should see them in a file browser. Use the upload window to upload a new image. Once loaded, click on the picture and you will see the link to the picture in your edit screen. That will tell you where your picture is saved in /files.
TinyMCE/IMCE stores images in a different sub folder than Image Gallery.
Actually, I find gallery very annoying. I've had it links to images gets broken, so I wonder if that is not part of your problem. I used CCK and views to create my gallery:

on this page:

Where I also use IMCE to insert pictures in the articles.

Well, this had been going on for months, with photos disappearing at random intervals, and I'd already tried everything you suggested, and more, but the fox would not be fenced.
Of course, soon after I finally posted this query the answer occurred to me. Yes, I admit it, I should have looked there first, not last . The user herself had been deleting the files: once the IMCE browser got too full she'd randomly delete some..
IMCE's 'delete file' option is now disabled, the user understands what happened.
Thanks to both of you for your input and help. It's really great to have such quick response and help!

same troubles but users have no delete rights
Hello sorry to hijack this thread, I have the same trouble and, because here users don't have any delete rights, I thought of these two answers :
-The "backup" script the web host is running weekly. Anyone already experienced such "malevolence" maybe? :)
-Could cron.php be the culprit when doing drupal_bootstrap(DRUPAL_BOOTSTRAP_FULL); ? (I mean triggering things that would lead to physically delete files from the server, which I highly doubt but trying to consider every paths)
Same proble, Image are been deleted
I’m having the same problem, Image are been deleted from the folder. I’m the only User with permission to access to the administration of the site and also to the server. All these star when I install the module Poormanscron to launch automatically the cron.php, I’m going to deactivate this module to see if that is the problem.

I'm not sure if my issue is
I'm not sure if my issue is related but I also find images are randomly deleted from the site's file folder. It happens on a variety of sites and I believe on multiple servers. Seems like there must be a bug in there somewhere. I'm running drupal 6.19
