Notifications and messaging are essential piece of Drupal core. Because they provide basic frameworks as well as functionality they're often misunderstood. Notifications allows plug-ins to define events and subscriptions to manage messaging traffic. Messaging is a complimentary framework that allows message sending independent of methods such as Email, IM and SMS. At the next Baltimore Drupal Meetup will dig into these modules and discuss how to implement and build these frameworks.
