Since Paypal is a no-go here in SA, what is the best alternative receive international payments for freelance and contract work?
Something that is acceptable to my client as well.

I'm about to put myself out there....

Not Mechant

Hi J
I don't want/need to register as a merchant to do it. This is different from E-commerce. It is payment for work done. A lot of people use Paypal to do it.

The closest options to paypal...

richard banks's picture

... that I can find are:

AlertPay (https://www.alertpay.com/)
Moneybookers (http://www.moneybookers.com/)

and

Setcom (http://www.setcom.com/)

You may be able to use 2checkout and they accept paypal but you will need to create a product every time you want to get paid.

Thanks

I'm busy writing an email to Setcom. They are my first choice. I know them as I did a module sponsored by them.
Will check out the others.

I've heard somewhere that Google checkout only works in the US?

"I've heard somewhere that Google checkout only works in the US?"

US and UK actually (I've tried to sign up). I don't think we will see Google checkout in SA for a while.

south african government

south african government thinks that these systems can be used for money laundering as they cannot track the cash :).

Just ask them to do a bank transfer

adrian's picture

It takes some time to set up on their side (need to go to the bank), and you need to phone your bank's international transfer division and
find all the necessary information (such as the bank's swift code, which is kind of like an international bank identifier number).

It's all become really efficient. Absa processes my international incoming transfers in less than 24 hours these days, and I often get international transfers come through faster than local transfers between banks.

The future is so Bryght, I have to wear shades.

Maybe I should move to ABSA :)

Thanks Adrian
I've dealt with international transfers before, but found it to be a real pain with FNB. First I had to confirm by phone that the money is really mine, then I had to go sign clearance at a branch. OK, the amounts were pretty big and the last time I did it was last year.
I'll find out from the bank about costs and procedures.

Well. maybe in my case it was simpler

adrian's picture

It was salary payments after all.

No clearance time, no signing anything, but every time i get paid i get a call from absa to confirm clearance and tell me what the exchange rate is.
During Rand instability periods i could also tell them to hold onto the money until i clear it's transfer (which at times is beneficial.... mondays are a good day to clear international transfers, as the rand seems to get nailed, by friday it has usually recovered somewhat).

Payoneer

I saw some people on the mybroadband.co.za forums talking about Payoneer, but I can't vouch for it as I've never used it.

For their page on getting paid: Card Holders

It looks like you get a mastercard and an account of sorts, that you can use to locally draw money paid into the account offshore. Also may be a handy alternative to paypal when buying stock photos and whatnot.
