Hi All,
How about having a group of newbies meeting once a week to learn about one module / profile / feature at a time...
I was thinking Drupal Commerce would be a good idea to start with... good videos tuts and admin guides are available online as well... we could also do some screencasts from the newbie perspective... and extend the contribution of our SEADUG community to the larger Drupal community...
Guidance of the gurus would go a long way to help the newbies... to whom they have already been much too gracious and kind... doing it online over Skype with screen-sharing (free for 2 people video conferencing) would also work for me... or with Skype Group Video Conferencing (paid sibscription) would also work with me...
Looking forward to your comments, thoughts and suggestions...
thanks,
Hemant

Google+ Hangouts also work
Google+ Hangouts also work for video conferencing. My four-person company uses them across two countries and three timezones for our weekly meeting.
Thanks...
Thanks for sharing... so we can go Google+ Hangout as well... looking for the participants now... thanks..
google+ Hangouts...
It works nice for conf calls but hte screen sharing is not active yet... just fyi... skype has free screen sharing but the conf-call is not free... one-on-one discussion works fine though... I used to use www.dimidim.com earlier for group calls and screen sharing... but that's now bought by cisco and no longer available free on the internet... more of a enterprise solution now... any other suggestion is welcome... thanks for your help...
Please don't forget accessibility
Just wanted to mention that some of us have accessibility issues (hearing, vision) that would make Google+ Hangout suboptimal. For that reason, I encourage SEADUG to also schedule in-person newbie sessions. I suggest that the co-working period already scheduled for before the 6 PM meetings would be ideal.
Thanks.
Commerce
I'm not yet a guru, but I would like to dive into Commerce with you guys. Walking through it together will help us learn quickly without the frustration of getting stuck. I'm going home on Tuesday, for the rest of November, so I will only be available via email/chat. Feel free to send any questions to me. Lets keep an eye out for tutorials to share with the group and put together a solid howto for newbies.
Learning Plan...
Hi All,
I actually started learning on my own and identified that the commerce guys have actually put together a nice Users Guide... and some videos as well that are hosted on their site, vimeo.com and on tutr.tv. However we can start as a team this Sunday... I was planning to learn the following:
The step by step learning objectives could be:
1. learn basic druCommerce configurations such as Currency settings (including mutli-currency) and other preliminary settings.
2. the pricing rules set up and a handful of scenarios... various options of taxation, discounts, gratuity, shipping charges, subscription / donation settings etc...
2. Setting up Product configurations - this happens to be a little complicated. It will be nice to try out a couple of scenarios.
3. The Cart configurations.
4. the Checkout configurations - single pg and multi-pg
5. Payment processing - paypal / credit card and bank.
6. Order mgmt.
Open to comments and suggestions...
But first we need to decide how to have this discussions... my personal thought is to have this once a week, online & preferably every Sunday afternoon for the next say 5 weeks... because once a month and tied along with the our SEADUG meetup may be too much time to remember what we learn in the previous session... and we might need more than an hour sometimes... I still need to try out on Googel+ if we would be able to share the screen with each other. Doing online will also help us learning jointly without the need to travel and look for the venue... (less overheads basically).
Also was wondering if this Sunday would sound like a good idea to anyone... for this we will need to be on Google+ very soon and be connected as well...
thanks,
We may be able to make use of
We may be able to make use of the Drupal Dojo's goto meeting for this group, depending on scheduling and availability. This would make it easy to record and post the sessions in the Drupal Kata and when you have meaningful lessons, best practices etc. we can also post them on the Drupal Dojo.
Have you settled on a regular meeting day/time?
We can also set up a group on the DrupalKata as we did for the Barn Raising and the Drupal Clinic. This way there would be an open workspace with wiki, books, calendar, task list etc... all the basic Open Atrium features.
Unfortunately, I am not able to join you this Sunday but I will look forward to catching up on the groups activities. In the meantime, I have created the Seattle Self Learning Group on the Drupal Kata http://drupalkata.com/sslg. If participants sign up for an account on the Drupal Kata and let us know who you would like to have administer the group, we will assign the necessary permissions. There is documentation available on the Kata site as well as on the Open Atrium site. There are also a number of people in the SDUG that have experience using this Open Atrium site as they have been involved in other SDUG learning projects.
I'm happy to help where I can.
This is great...
Hi Eric, this is great... I think this will be the best way to go forward.... We are just waiting for some confirmations for this Sunday 4 pm to 6 pm... Otherwise hopefully we will be able to start by next Sunday.... Thanks for your help and offering to use the Drupal kata and the gotomeeting platform. Would you like to specify how to use the gotomeeting for the discussion in your absence just in case we get organized for this Sunday? Thanks.
Moving this conversation to http://drupalkata.com/sslg/
Hi All,
Thanks for your response... request everyone interested to join the druaplkata.com at http://drupalkata.com/sslg/ . I have also suggested an outline for our learning... please review and suggest if we would add something...
