Version control for Drupal core PHP elements

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I am beginning to write my own PHP modules. But its a pain to maintain versions on my local system.
How could I associate my Drupal with GIT? or is there any other better version control system?

You definatly want to use git....

I would recommend watching Chris Shattuk's videos on using git.. he is almost done creating them.
