Future Development on http://dug.lv

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Hey all, I've been caught up on the most recent discussions at our last meeting. I regret that I could not be there, but think I can make arrangements to be at the next one as it may shape up to be quite productive.

Jason has brought to my attention that "Most people feel like the way the website currently is setup for development is too daunting to have to learn in order to just do simple things." I would like to let everyone know that this was not my intention. My intension is to help everyone learn what it is like to work on a project that has multiple administrators. And I know I will learn along the way as well. While I will not be giving everyone user 1 or full admin permssions on the site, I am open to helping with any wanted modules and configing specific permissions for specific reasons.

Another idea is to have a wide open sandbox on the site that everyone can have full access to the admin and build out whatever. This can live at sandbox.dug.lv and pull off of a branch in the repo. With Drupal 7's ability to add new modules via the UI this could lead to some very fun and messy hack sessions. And if we blow up the sandbox, no worries.

New features can be build out and tested in the sandbox and migrated to the main site later as a well tested feature. Again the idea here is to promote and learn Drupal together and I am willing to make the barriers to entry as low as possible.

What we really need is ideas for actual functionality on the site. Before worrying about the development process, let's think about what the requirments are for the next killer feature. Please, submit ideas of what you want to build and what modules you need and we can make it happen.

I have two ideas off the bat that I would like to see on the site.
1) A Twitter feed of the #lvdug or #duglv on the front page
2) A place to post presentation materials

This second one is much more involved and can include some discussion about what this includes and what is required to build it.

There is also some house keeping tasks like upgrading the core to the latest version and setting up a sandbox and dev instance of the site, etc. These all provide opportunities for learning.

Let's do it!

Upgrades

It sounds like you want me to wait on doing the upgrade to 7.9 so that I can demo it to the group. Is that true? I'm okay either way, but maybe we want that done and out of the way before the meeting.

What does everyone else want?

Core upgrade done...

sorry if I was unclear or didn't post about it. The site's core was updated on Nov. 7th: https://github.com/lvdug/dug.lv/commit/b6ec7c7c20a3db7d628541f9528f0b12a...

So, that's done. You will see that it took a few commits because I messed up a bit and had to add and remove some files, etc. So, demoing core upgrades some times contain things like that because there is a lot of moving parts.

There are plenty of modules that need updating. That would be a great thing to present to the group during our sprint at the next meeting. Which I will be at, yah!

Twitter feeds

Jason: I have no preference either way concerning the upgrade. As for other features on the site, perhaps we could have a page showing the individual tweets of the members, in addition to the #lvdug or #duglv tweets.

yep, we should build this and

yep, we should build this and talk about the different ways to approach this piece of functionality. I will prepare some stuff for this.
