We have been looking at how well the promos are going to suit our needs and we have (almost) decided that incorporating them into what the site needs other than articles is going to be too much work.
So we are looking at going forward without promos. We obviously miss out on some cool functionality on the front page, but my question i is if there is anything in the pipeline for promos that we just cannot miss?

We are currently looking into various solutions for promos. One thing that we are thinking about is to separate out the promo system part of the web product, so that it would be optional. If we do it that way, you could use a lot of the layouts and do your own promotion system.
In the long run we are looking into having a completely different kind of solution for promotions and regions all together. Have a look at This sandbox for progress on that.
