SKOS Integration to Drupal

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi all,
I am a researcher from DFKI in Germany and we (under leading of Leo Sauermann) are currently working on a project called OrganiK which aims to research and develop a semantic web 2.0 (social, semantic, 2.0) knowledge management system for SMEs.

We have found Drupal as a good candidate for our initial work, now we want to use SKOS to bootstrap the data stored in a Drupal taxonomy. That means we need a utility which can import and export SKOS/RDF data from/to Drupal taxonomy. Does anyone give us some directions how to do that or tell us if any component or module exists for SKOS integration.

We looked at the RDF module but we don't know which repository to use for temporary models which are only used during the import process. Also, is there an RDF/XML parser. Is there example code showing how the taxonomy module can be filled?

We will keep you updated on the process, the OrganiK project also has a clear statement towards open source, so our code will be available. If the quality is good enough, we may publish the SKOS import/export later as a module.

We would appreciate all advices coming from you.

I'd be very keen to hear of your developments - I'm currently using drupal to develop and serve thesauri, but I've mostly been using CCK rather than taxonomy. Take a look at http://gbif.myspecies.info for some of the vocabularies.

In terms of parsers, I know the feedapi module has some parsers (including the simplepie parser) and these can map to various things within drupal including CCK fields and taxonomy terms, so this may be your best way in. I've been using the http://drupal.org/project/node_import module to do the import.

I would recommend to also ask this question in the Taxonomy group. See in particular the EOL taxonomy sprint a few months ago which brought some new enhancement to the taxonomy module and other contrib related modules. The Taxonomy import/export via XML module is probably what you are looking for re XML import/export.

Thanks for the comments

Thanks for your comments, it helps us much. We will inform you about further OrganiK project progress.

Please do try out the RDF

Please do try out the RDF import/export in taxonomy_xml!
I'd love to see some real-world use of SKOS etc, but the devlopment I've been doing on my own hasn't really been getting anyone else involved, so I'd be interested in other use-cases, feedback and approaches. The RDF support I added to taxonomy_xml is mostly made-up, with reference to all existing work I could find ... but without any strict structure or method.

I might be interested as well

I do not know enough yet about SKOS to judge, but I'd like to keep an eye on this.

It is done

Remzi programmed the import/export for SKOS and I submitted it as patch here:
http://drupal.org/node/560326

we are scientists though and if someone from you could improve the patch and help us to get it into taxonomy_xml, it would be easier...

SKOS collection

Can SKOS collection be imported / exported
if yes - how do they appear within taxonomy
