Upgrading from Drual 6 to 7

Not sure how to proceed with it. So far, and once everything is backed up, I've always worked live on the website. How can I learn to have a second non-live website where I can control both the existing 6 and the new 7?

If you can help, or point me in the right direction, I'd be most appreciative.
