Drupal + Mobile Integration

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

It was great to meet everyone who was at the meetup last night at Duke CE. As part of discussing possible ideas to motivate future lunch/evening meetings, we talked a little about the area of mobile technologies and integrating/synchronizing with Drupal. The company I work for is currently using Drupal 7 as a backend for a mobile fitness app for Android, and we'd love to get in touch with those in the community who are doing similar development, or are curious about how the technology works or its potential.

I need to tackle this for my project as well.

My idea was to write an OAuth based data API on top drupal getting inspiration from the runkeeper health graph api. I'm about 2-3 weeks from starting the work, so the timing is great. As an end-to-end proof of concept I was going to tweak the my tracks code to push the data up to the server. I need to push GPS tracks as well as ANT sensor tracks (heart-rate, cadence, power). Live tracking would be a bonus.

Any guidance, advice, info, or free code! etc you can provide would be awesome. Especially if I'm going down the wrong path.

Sounds right for Services

Seems like what you need would fit in well with the Services module; how the data would be stored is another question, because if it's highly specialized and/or high-volume data, you may not want it all stored as nodes. If there's an existing module (e.g. some kind of "GPS tracks" module) that takes care of the overhead of storing the data in its own table(s) and connecting with Views and what-not, then you'd just have to add an adapter for Services to talk to it (unless this theoretical module already has Services integration.) Seems like you wouldn't need to pull anything from server to device, so at least that's one thing that you maybe don't have to worry about. Looks like we'll chat more about this on Wednesday.
