Are there any existing guidelines or best practices when it comes to developing specific install profiles and distributions? As far as I can tell, I don't see info on this type of contribution (http://drupal.org/node/22286) or a means to set up a project similar to how you'd do it for a module or theme (http://drupal.org/node/7765).
I think this question is relevant to the context of this group. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Perhaps
I think I remember hearing somewhere, sometime that there would be hosting on drupal.org for install profiles and distributions. I don't know of any progress on this issue though. It seems like a really good idea now that Drupal 5.0 is about to be released.
debate on the infrastructure list
right, as far as it got was a debate on the d.o infrastructure email list, which died down without resolution. :( i personally think it'd be better to host these profiles, create a new project type for them, etc, etc, all on d.o. however, i don't make the decisions on my own, and there are a lot of people to get into agreement before something like this gets decided...
feel free to bring it up again, perhaps as a post to the development list, and see what kind of interest you can stir up.

Seems necessary for effective collaboration
Thanks for pointing me to the infrastructure list (greggles also provided some valueable insight and advice). After skimming thru the relevant threads (on the infrastructure list), it seemed that people were leaning towards supporting install profiles/distributions on drupal.org -- just need to figure out the best way to go about that (easier said than done?). I'll most certainly do my best to stir up support and attention since I don't see how much value (I think I made some valid points) we'll get from sporadic, back-channel discussions. I think a lot of good will come from just opening up the debate and encouraging collaboration.
Thanks Derek and everyone else whose been making contributions and commitments to the community. Should be an amazing new year!
