Plans?

LIGHTNING ROUNDS

New feature. Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation.

1)Current trends of Drupal - jvitello
2)Site planning for an organization that defies classification - davidwatson
3)Field groups and field collections to click together complex CRUD and info architecture - Patrick Avella
4)Using LESS is good - njmahesh
5)What is 960.gs grid system? - njmahesh
6)Geofield/Geocoder, and the query code I used to get Location Proximity searching working in D7 - Patrick Avella

20 Min Talks

Have a topic that needs more then 5 minutes, we have slots of 20 minute talks. The basic idea is there are broader subjects or more detailed discussions this is the type of talk you would want to signup for, please mention 20 min talk when posting your talk description and the audience you expect to speak to.

1)Omega Base theme - Patrick Avella
2)Twitter Bootstrapper - njmahesh
3)One-click Deployment: Installation Profiles & Features - davidwatson

We will also have the New 2 Drupal BoF(birds of a feather). If you are new to Drupal and the talks don't apply to you some of us will take a group and talk with you about your issues.

Comments

Is there any interest in any

patrickavella's picture

Is there any interest in any particular speaking topics? Even though it's my first Drupal meet up I have no issue throwing together some slides and going over some of the things I've worked with.

I could potentially speak about:

  • Omega Base theme (either the "why responsive" or the how)
  • Field groups and field collections to click together complex CRUD and info architecture
  • Geofield/Geocoder, and the query code I used to get Location Proximity searching working in D7. (my glue code does not have full project status, and there are competing "Location" modules that may or may not serve a similar purpose)

If anyone is interested in something particular, please let me know. Otherwise I will pick something at random.

I look forward to meeting all of you.

Thanks,
Patrick

Omega Base theme

jvitello's picture

I'd be interested in a talk about the what/why of Omega Base theme. I haven't used drupal since 5.x, and I mostly rolled out custom themes. I'm just getting back into things, so I'd like to know some new options that might have strengths that outweigh the flexibility of rolling-your-own.

Omega

alexiswatson's picture

Really interested to hear about the Omega base theme, myself. I'm actually developing a base theme based on the Golden Grid System to support our needs here, though I'm sure I could learn a lot from the way Omega handles things.

Then again, we've also been using Field Groups and Field Collections extensively in our new site, and I'm always curious to see how others do things. Same with Geofield, really; any of the three sound fantastic. :]

Drupal in NYS Gov't – Lightning Talk

jvitello's picture

It's probably more relevant to the business side of things, but I'm interested in giving a short talk about the current trends of Drupal within the State.

• who some key players are
• what's been done
• what to look out for in the future

Hi JVitello, I would be

patrickavella's picture

Hi JVitello, I would be interested in hearing more about that. I'd buy you a beer to get the director's cut. There is a good chance we may have crossed paths in my journeys around the state.

Possible Topics (20min)

alexiswatson's picture

A few things I could discuss:

Drupal@EMPAC
Adventures in migrating Rensselaer's Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center website from static content to Drupal, including the special considerations of site planning for an organization that (often intentionally) defies classification. Discussed both from the business/organizational (user advocacy, organizational challenges, content strategy) and technical perspectives (staged deployment with an existing ticketing system, media handling, mobile strategy).
One-click Deployment: Installation Profiles & Features
A complete workflow that keeps as much configuration in code as possible, keeping in line with best practices in revision control while allowing for one-click deployment once the site is ready to launch.
Agile Drupal
Possible approaches to Agile project management in Drupal. Topics to include task estimation at various levels, user stories, checking estimates, workflow, iterative development, and receiving continuous feedback.

Depending on other areas of interest, I may be able to put something else together.

Looking forward to meeting you all. Cheers!

Features

patrickavella's picture

Features and profiles sounds good to me. I know all the cool kids are using them, but I've been slow to catch on. I'm really glad you'll be able to make it!

Features & Omega

topazzz's picture

Features and Omega sound good to me. I have some experience with Omega but would love to find out how others use it.

Recently I completed an implementation of COD (http://drupal.org/project/cod) If anyone is interested I can talk about that.

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Meeting Location

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Put me down to speak about

patrickavella's picture

Put me down to speak about Omega then. Three votes takes it. I'll try to split it half way between why vs how.

Install Profiles & Features it is!

alexiswatson's picture

For those torn between this and the BoF: The talk is more on the technical side and will be geared more toward intermediate site-builders and developers, though there are some special considerations that themers may find useful.

I've been meaning to build an

I've been meaning to build an Omega sub-theme for awhile now, so I'd love to hear more about it.

Just realized I'm listed for

patrickavella's picture

Just realized I'm listed for two 20 minute talks.

Sorry to disappoint, but I only prepared for one, on the Omega base theme and the responsive web. I could talk about field collections and field groups, but there wouldn't be any slides or narrative. Maybe for the lightning round then.

See you all tonight. Cheers!
