sime's picture

I have two great presentations lined up for the morning session. Looks like Drupal for Enterprise is the order of the morning. Will confirm details when I have blurbs.

The afternoon will be some form of unconference style, breaking into groups. I'll work out what method to use.

Im in...

drupalcamp melbourne - Great Day!

Thanks sime - for putting this together! And to everyone who went along. It was great to see some familiar faces, and meet a bunch of new ones.

I really enjoyed hearing about the lonely planet, and vic uni projects - and the challenges of db replication from andrew boag. It was a nice range of perspectives which I found really useful. The unconference in the afternoon certainly had a range of topics. Although I'm not sure how successful it was, or if I communicated clearly enough with everyone about how it would work. I certainly enjoyed the installation, innoDB, and theming sessions I attended.

The biggest disappointment was not having enough time to delve into the meaty issues of the Sprint and Future of the community in Australia... but we probably had enough points to think about that might prompt some ongoing discussion. Caitlin introduced the idea of marketing a drupal business, and drupal services - for the community and by the community - we could have had a whole session on this issue - and is something OSIA will cover in the future. Marketing in my view is ultimately about understanding your market and using the right forms of communication to engage that market.

I was going to do a lightning talk about community events. Whilst I accept my position on this is biased, I do believe that meetups and camps are great ways to focus community activity and energy. Zane's point about organising things on weekends is a good one. We may need a range of regular activities to really serve the community well.

So here's some upcoming events.
BarCampMelbourne 12-13 September - http://barcampmelbourne.org/
[registrations will open in august - join lists now to stay informed]
OSDC: Brisbane 25-27 November - http://2009.osdc.com.au/
[call for papers now open - submit drupal stuff]

Ongoing regular:
Melbourne Drupal meetups - 2nd Tuesday of the month
Linux User Vic - main meeting 1st Tuesday of the month / Beginners workshop 3rd Saturday of the month
AUSOM - Apple users - 1st Saturday
PHPmelb - currently refocussing - looking at monday nights.
MySQL meetup - 3rd Wednesday
Web Standards Group - 3rd Wednesday
MXUG - Melbourne anything user group - 3rd Wednesday

A great event...

thezed's picture

I must say this was a great event.

Being a drupal n00b I was a little hesitant in attending, as I thought I may have been a bit out of place with all the project maintainers / contributors etc, as well as the Drupal veterans. I'm glad I attended, and I would recommend the next DrupalCamp to other drupal n00bs. As well as learning a great deal, it was great to meet other people / companies in the drupal space.

p.s. Just one quick thing on your post Donna...

Zane's point about organising things on weekends is a good one

I think it was actually Stuart (I think that was his name!) that made this point.

I did think it was a good idea though ;)

Weekends for Meets and Camps.

kattekrab's picture

thezed - you are absolutely right ! It was Stuart - not zane who raised point out weekends are better for this kind of thing than meetups!

@kattekrab

cheers y'all

@kattekrab, @thezed - yeah, that was indeed Stuart, he asked some pearler questions IMO.

It was a great day and I really appreciate everyone coming and not complaining about the instant coffee. I think it was a big step forward for me and I filled in a lot of gaps in my knowledge about doing events (usually Caitlin saves me and organizes the things I forget).

kattekrab, hey I thought the afternoon was really successful and people are confirming that to me. Of course, the group didn't have a lot of unconference experience, and that really helps. Personally I've only been to one unconference event, so I spent a lot of time learning from you!

I have some other thoughts to blog about. I'm also starting to think about a Drupal Australia site, I'm about to post about it.

thanks

Hi - I just wanted to chime and thank everyone who organised and participated on the day for a great, stimulating event.

I think the level of organisation was just right for the size and type of group, and the level and range of information presented was great too.

I enjoyed the afternoon sessions, and took away some actionable new knowledge from the discussion we had about deployment.

Sorry I had to leave early, so missed the later sprint/community stuff. It was great to meet everyone - look forward to doing it again!

feedback

sime's picture

I've had some solid feedback coming in, I'll report on the main points after a little while.

Thanks also

Would also like to say a big thanks for an excellent event. My first attendance at a Drupal community event and was fantastic to see that there is such a passionate and dedicated group of Drupal users and developers in Melbourne.

While the key note presentations were a bit above my technical level, I thought that all the speakers did an excellent job of still keeping them interesting and accessible for someone with moderate Drupal knowledge and was very interesting to see how Drupal is used in very large deployment environments.

The un-conference in the afternoon was great and I got a bunch of new skills and ideas out of it.

Looking forwards to the next one.

Public appreciation...

rport's picture

Hey Sime,

While I have personally congratulated you and your team for a great event, I wanted to make a public statement of appreciation.

As you know, I come to these events with a slightly different perspective than as a coder, themer, developer... I come from the perspective as an educated user... While I can code and theme, I am time poor so I can't indulge myself...

Again, there were many aspects of the conference that I enjoyed, it was also well implemented at a good venue. If you consider this again, I would entertain a once a year 2-day event, with a little more time on the unconference...

So well done...

Russ

cheers :)

Hey Russ

Thanks so much for being an educated user! I love your input at these events.

start-up themes

amaree's picture

Hi all ; )

at the Drupal Camp people asked which Theme starter kit was good we discussed Zen and Genisis I have found this great comparision tool which i belive may come in handy to many out there in the Drupal Community

http://adaptivethemes.com/starter-theme-comparison.html

Gives you are good breakdown of what does what and what features they have, that way you can judge on a project by project basis if needed to (i.e some support accessibility features and some don't support them so well ; )

Thanks and Thanks

Sheedz-gdo's picture

Cheers for that aimeemaree.

Also, while a little delayed, I just wanted to say thanks to Simon and co. for getting the Drupal Camp happening, and creating a successful day and getting the group together.

Sure the coffee was instant, but I just made tea... everyone's a winner. If the world give you lemons, throw them at someone you don't like.

Cheers

another great find

amaree's picture
