Is there any active activity in this area? It is very much of interest to me and an area of expertise for me. I'm also involved in similar initiatives in the commercial, academic, and community areas (Pachube, Burning Sky Software, "Web of Things", others).

Drupal + Arduino combination demo at Drupalcon DC
There is some activity going on, but this group is just getting started. At Drupalcon DC I presented an integration between Drupal 6 and an Arduino board with a network port and an LCD screen. Essentially the idea is that you can create a physical dashboard that serves as a health monitor for one or more websites.
The idea is sound, though what I did was very much a demo - nothing ready for shrink wrap.
I am curious what type of project you had in mind.
Some clue about drupal-arduino integration?
hello ,
i am also interesting in this topic, could you give some clue to start?
I am part of a newborn workgroup which are going to start to study that.
thanks
Device stuff
On the Arduino front, Pachube is (I think) a Drupal site with integration to Arduino and other devices for "connected environments". Device integration makes more sense for Drupal in the context of Activity Streams (tagged activity streams, actually), so there is significant interaction with those project(s) needed.
Tux Graphics board
I've been using this board:
http://shop.tuxgraphics.org/electronic/detail_avrwebserver4.html
it can operate as client or server and could post data / get notifications from Drupal pretty easily.
One of the most bare bones internet devices ... but would be great for sensor integration or notification / control purposes.
Denver Drupal Con BOF

I'll be there for sure, hope anyone else interested will be as well!
any update
we are planing to collect sensor data into Drupal, your help is highly appreciated...
