A couple design questions have arisen about the layout of Article nodes. Is there any way to apply the Kicker in the North American sense, that is as a few words in smaller type that appears above headlines? Also, is there a way for the author's byline to appear before the start of the Article's body - as well as the author box below the Article?

I am certainly no expert,
I am certainly no expert, there are a number of questions on this group that I have posted, some answered, some not, but I am wondering, what version of NS are you using? Drupal 6 or 7? On my D6 version I was able to move the byline up by loading the node (signed on as Admin naturally) and going into "Customize this page" at the bottom and dragging it up to the top. As far as a second byline (If I am reading this right) you should, I believe, be able to duplicate the data element in the in the Add Content > Node and selecting Field: Byline (field_ns_article_byline) Node Reference and dragging it down, or up.
If I misread your question, I apologize. :-)
Oh sorry, the same concept
Oh sorry, the same concept goes for moving the kicker up and down. As far as what the kicker looks like, that is CSS. I use the Firebug Firefox plug-in to find where the CSS code is being pulled from. It has saved my sanity more than once...
