CINDUG members,
CINDUGer Phil Roberto has a potential group project which we could use as a means to gather, teach, learn AND gain some income for the group.
Phase Two of the Oceanic Society web site is about to get underway. This internationally recognized non-profit (based in San Francisco) needs Drupal help. As Phil's first Drupal project (constructed with toothpicks, bubble gum and aluminum foil) it is in dire need of an upgrade to Drupal version 6 and the latest CiviCRM, some CCK/Views magic and more. There is even some talk of interest by west coast neighbor Google to apply some brain power to help where they can in the realm of geo-tracking migration routes.
The Oceanic Society works in the ocean deep but as a non-profit has shallow resources. Phil is proposing that if the CINDUG group will commit to a set amount of hours he will not draw a wage, but rather align with the group effort, submit an invoice based on those combined hours and let CINDUG get paid. We can start building a CINDUG treasure chest which we can use to host bigger events, bring speakers in, t-shirts, etc.
If (and this is the important part) a solid response from committed folks comes back Phil would like to work to draw up very definite chunks of the project which we could apply ourselves to in code sprints. We could gather in groups with experienced Drupalers leading/demonstrating to the less experienced. There is work to be done no matter what your Drupal skill level is. Sounds like a great way to learn CCK/Views and other Drupal magic, gather with friends and get some good work done for a great cause - yes?
With all that said, I would like to hear back from anybody interested in taking part in this project asap -- either reply below, or hit my contact form link.

Thanks for the post.
I'm interested in being part of this great educational project. I'm not an experienced drupal expert. I'm a new beginner and eager to explore drupal in every way I can. I'm an IT student at University of Cincinnati. Please let me know what requirements or procedures that I need to be part of this project.
Thanks
Julu
When does it start?
I am new to g.d.o and I just became a member of CINDUG the other day. My brother and I have been working with Drupal for about 2 years.
I think it is really great that there is a Cincy group at g.d.o! My brother and I live in Cincy (Mt. Washington) and may be interested in joining this effort if it starts no earlier than a few weeks from now.
We are trying to get a new CollectiveColors.com out the door. Our current version is a bit crusty... Too crusty.
Regards, Derek
PS: Hey Julu! Welcome to Drupal and how is my old Alma Mater?

Derek,
Thanks for welcoming me. By the way, who/what is Alma Mater? I don't have a clue as to what you are talking about.
Congratulations to you and the rest of the CollectiveColors.com team.
Wish you all best as you continue to contribute to the OpenSource community.
Thanks,
Julu
According to Wikipedia
Alma Mater is used "As a reference to an academic institution"
"In many modern languages it is usually and principally heard as a term of academia; thus, in the English language, it is often used in place of the name of the university or college from where a person has attended or graduated. The bronze statue on the steps of Low Library on the campus of Columbia University is of an anthropomorphic Alma Mater, and named so. In American English, it may also be used in reference to the high school that an individual has attended."
You see I went to UC too. Great School.
