Girls in Tech

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

It would be helpful to have an umbrella website that links to websites and organizations out there for Girls in Tech. Here is my short list at the time. Could you please be so kind as to add to it?

More choices:

www.codeyear.com (teaches JavaScript)

www.blackgirlscode.com/

www.KHANacademy.org (teaches Python)

Elisabeth Robson authored the Head First Series (wickedlysmart.com). These are effective resources for training in HTML with CSS & XHTML, PHP, MySQL, HTML5, iPhone and iPad Development and iOS5. This is especially good for students that want clear pictures and diagrams to understand what they are learning. The authors worked with Disney before so this is an especially clearer series that could even be adapted for use with 7th-12th grade students.

I don't have any links to add but will be attentive. Thanks again for organizing the Drupalchix BoF, also. If any of you are near Erie, PA, please let me know!

virtual Drupalchix meetup

How about a monthly virtual Drupalchix meetup, too?

Like through Google+ hangout.

That's a good idea, Greta.

That's a good idea, Greta. Would the #drupalchix channel on IRC work? A few of us idle in the there pretty regularly, but having set "meetup hours" would be cool. (There's always the web client, if you're not big on IRC clients: http://webchat.freenode.net/ )

Nice thing about a Google+

Nice thing about a Google+ type solution is that people can connect with video, if they choose. (I'm normally camera shy, but for the ladies, might come out of hiding. grin) And, can actually talk rather than type.

A couple meetups that I have joined virtually for other groups have used it successfully.

virtual meetup

I'd be interested in a virtual meetup. The group nearest me is two hours away which is too far for a monthly meeting. Thank you.

I suppose Women in Free Software overlaps with Girls in Tech, so:

EdLab Group in the US also runs several science/engineering/math/robotics programs for kids/teens and several focus on girls-only. (For transparency, they're one of our clients.) I think that the other ones I know about have all been mentioned already!
