Developement-transition of Drupal Commons from D6 to D7: how to react as a user

Hello dear buddies, hello dear friends

i am brandnew to Drupal and to Commons too. At the moment i am planning the design of a Commons-Site. I do not have launched a live site - i just am ironing out the concepts and do some work behind the scenes - on a lampp on my Linux-box. This should accentuate the situation i am in.
On the other handside there is the dramatic change in development: Drupal-commons is right in the mids of a transition from D6 to D7 see http://groups.drupal.org/node/210038
i think that i (we and that means all novices that are planning a launch) should focus on d7 now. And as i am new to Drual i need to have some insights and point of views from experts and some senior Drupal users.

From the user- point of view (that is in the pre-launch-phase)

...Custom work in D6 and then moving it to D7 a few months later is silly. and for development work extending Commons with additional Drupal functionality.

Limiting dev work with D6 modules and not embracing D7 modules is equally silly.

ANY crippled working version of Commons in D7** is a much better place to work from. Much of the customizations will be, in my case, around modules that Commons elect to support. Examples could be activity (status), notifications, and translations. If we take a closer look at the Organic-Groups we can see a major paradigm change in concept, design of this important extension/module see http://www.lullabot.com/articles/organic-groups-drupal-7

Organic Groups (OG) for Drupal 6 is a powerful and widely used module
for creating websites that enable group collaboration or to create
'mini sites' within a bigger Drupal site. The Drupal 7 version of
Organic Groups is a total rewrite, Taking advantage of many new Drupal
7 features, in particular the new APIs for entities and fields. One of
the big differences between the Drupal 6 and Drupal 7 versions is an
expansion of the concept of what a 'group' is. In D6, a group is a
node, and other nodes can be assigned to it as the content of the
group.

In D7, any type of entity can be a group and any type of entity can belong to a group. And as allready mentioned above: ANY crippled working version of Commons in D7 is a much better place to work from.

So, again - from the end-user-point of view, from one that is right in front of the pre-launch , i would say that we can conclude that we have to get D7 Commmons - The sooner the better!!!

So i just ask you: should i spend time in customization of Commons running Version 6.25 or should i wait for the next version - the version
that runs in D7

In the meantime i can focus on learning all the Drupaliz/shed concepts of D7 /8 Especially and among them for example the ones of...

  • a. Organic Groups
  • b. CCK

What do you say!? I look forward to a fruitful discussion
Above all - keep up the great project it rocks

It depends...

Hi unleash.

IMO everything really depends on your timeline and the deadlines.

If you can afford to wait for Commons D7 version - that should be IMHO the best choice.

But, if you need community web site here and now - go with the tools available i.e. Commons 6.x-2.x.

Cheers.

many thanks for the answer

hello dear mariomaric

many rhanks for your answer - your ideas are valuable. I guess that i have some time left and in the meantime i try to digg deeper into the concepts of

organic-groups
panels
and lots of other things more.

besides this learning-curve i will install all that stuff here on my local lampp and play around with all the things. And i will try to workout all the concepts for the community.

again many many thanks for sharing your ideas!

many greetings
