Why do translations not work

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I have some cck content and have an english page. I click the translate button and translate to spanish, the content creates the new node, but will now show no translations in either english or spanish (i.e. it is like 2 separate pieces of content).

Using 6.x

i18 has some serious issues in 6.x so I have quit using it.
