I don't get what 'Workflow' is about. As a subject I mean. I know that sometimes a user posts content that needs approval, and so in this sense there's a flow of work, as the user posts, the administrator approves, etc. And my brother works in a company that use Lotus Notes to create their own email-based applications. Ones to do with Workflow. Example: employee fills out holiday application form & sends it to his line manager, who responds to it & sends it to various people, etc. Stuff like that.
The reason I ask is because I'm quite new to Drupal (& to CMS's in general), and am trying to get my head round the major aspects.
[ Multimedia, E-commerce & Theming I mostly get. But 'workflow' remains a bit mysterious. ]
What I would've liked was to visit this group & click on a button that said 'Overview of Workflow'. Something that would've taken me to a flash movie (for instance) that would've explained what 'Workflow' is all about. Stuff like 'Workflow as a subject', 'Workflow within a CMS', core Drupal workflow modules, contrib Drupal workflow modules, where 'workflow' looks to be headed in the near future (perhaps stuff like Google Wave??), etc
Not to any massive depth. Just a decent overview. For 'orientation' purposes mainly.
Anyway, if, as a group, you have any desire in having an introduction movie of this nature (for noobs like myself), I'll be happy to create something like a flash movie (i'm pretty good with flash). So let me know if you do.
P.S: all I'll need is a simple script/storyboard/outline; just a side or two of A4, covering the major concepts. though having said that, if anyone could add some good anecdotal evidence of 'workflow in the workplace' & perhaps a 'grand-vision of the future of workflow' (to inspire one & all!!!), all the better

You're not the only one
You're not the only one David! The beginners' guide(s) are very useful if you have the time to exactly replicate their use-case but, if you're anything like me, your site will have some differences and putting aside the time to set it all up on a dev box just isn't going to happen, so if and when anything doesn't quite work correctly (in my case, I'm having problems working out how to make revisioning and workflow work without becoming impossibly complex, and how to get module_grants' grants to play logically with taxonomy_access.
Argh!!
Still, Workflow is an excellent module - I just need to figure out how I'm going to get it working!

A movie about basic publication workflows would be fantastic!
Re: "...all I'll need is a simple script/storyboard/outline..."
Would this content publication workflow tutorial work for you as a "script"?
err???
dunno, i've just had a look at that guide & it seems a bit scary (v technical). i was thinking a "laymans guide to workflow" might be more the ticket
still, if thats the sort of thing u'd like to see i can give it a go
But that fact that "it seems
But that fact that "it seems a bit scary (v. technical)" is exactly the reason why a movie would be great!
It will help reduce the barrier for people who want to start with publication workflows, but are intimidated by their complexity. If it was just a matter of pushing a couple of buttons we wouldn't need a movie as much.
I feel many in the community would love to see someone have a crack at it.
Where we'll put the links to the movie is something we can all think about in the meantime.
ok, then
i'll see what i can do
update...
i wanted to do an "introduction to workflow" movie - an overview, but a really incisive one, one that gives a brilliant orientation to the subject. that was where my motivation was
but i persevered with the "Publication Workflows" thing, as I figured if I could make that subject shine then that would really show everyone how useful "intro movies" can be (i think Drupal.org needs a lot more of them)
however, the Revisioning tutorial (http://drupal.org/node/408968) - & especially the "Revisioning for categorized content" tutorial (http://drupal.org/node/408018) - killed my motivation. not because of anything I did or didn't do, as I spent probably 3-4 days figuring out what it was all about (if you see my comments at the bottom of each page it'll be obvious i put the time in)
in the end, my comment that "authors/moderators can't even VIEW public content?" (in the comments section of the "Revisioning for categorized content" page) summed up my frustration. i just wasn't happy making a movie when i'd have to end with "but authors & moderators must log out to be able to view certain information, as they have less rights to view certain stuff than anonymous users". cos thats ridiculous, isn't it?
anyway, just saying why there's no "introduction to workflow" movie yet
if someone gives me a decent script, i'm still happy to make a good introductory movie. if i don't get one, i'll assume no-one's that bothered
That can't be right...
"authors/moderators can't even VIEW public content?...."
Will investigate.... And update the docs accordingly...
Great to hear that you haven't lost al motivation...
