User group meeting

I'm going to mix things up a little and propose a meeting on Tuesday June 19th, 2012 at the Cocoa Library.

Please add some topic ideas here. What kinds of things are you working on? What issues are you encountering and how did you solve them?

We'll also pick up the Drupal ladder and I'll report back on the recent Charlotte Drupal Camp and Southeast Linux Fest.

Drupal UI theming / Custom Formatters

greta_drupal's picture

Topic for discussion / presentation

  1. Drupal UI theming:
    A. Custom Formatter
    http://drupal.org/project/custom_formatters
http://customformatters.com (some really slick sample code)
    B. Taxonomy Formatter
    http://drupal.org/project/taxonomy_formatter
    C. Toxen Formatter
    http://drupal.org/project/token_formatters

  2. Formatter Modules shortcomings
    A. Ability to add customized attributes (title, longdesc, id, name, ...). This is surprisingly missing from core taxonomy module and the available formatter contrib modules.
Example: ability to add TITLE attribute with variable as value.

USE CASE:

Custom content type : Business Listing
Long forms -- questionnaires, surveys
Many custom fields, with multi-value select (checkboxes)
Get poor quality data because there isn't a description of the options.
With a hover-over-term description (be it on linked or plaintext container), UI/UX could be greatly improved.

I have been researching, experimenting, posting for a solution to have taxonomy term description display on hover of taxonomy term (as taxonomy term reference field type), on both node add/edit form and node display. I get tripped up on the syntax, as I am not a PHP coder. But, I have stumped a few coders and themers on this issue.

Possible solutions include:
1. theme override (theme.php)
2. custom field template (field--taxonomy-term-reference.tpl.php)
3. custom formatter

Have had very little response to posting in issue queues and g.d.o., and almost no response in IRC. (I have worked with one Drupaler, who also is in need of this feature, to create a patch for Taxonomy Formatter module to accomplish this in part, for node display only.)

But, I believe that the lack of easy customization of attributes, using variables/tokens, is an overlooked feature of the several modules* that I have tried in seeking a solution. (When I find a good solution, I'll do a write up.) Sure, it can be done in Views with rewrite output, but not everything will be a view. And, Views is not a good solution for the "DIY" client.

It is, afterall, a UI/UX issue and even accessibility issue.

  • Tipsy, qTip, Display Suite, Taxonomy Formatter, Custom Formatter, probably more

Thanks for the write-up!

Thanks for the write-up! Would you please join us and demonstrate this and perhaps as a group we can work on a solution?

What time? I'd have to join

I don't know how reliable the wifi would be. It would be great if you could join us in person and share what you know.

Entity Reference

That sounds great. I am in need of Entity Reference module tutoring. Reviewing the VSC site for Coding for a Cause would be helpful. What step should we be on for the Drupal Ladder? Thank you for putting this together.

What time on Tuesday, June

Update to the June Brevard Meetup tonight

dbdot's picture

We will have Erik Baldwin and John Learned from Cloudnynedesign in tonight for guest speakers!

Our meetup is still in the Cocoa Library (Central Brevard Library) but due to more library cutbacks, we will be in the periodical section instead of meeting room #4.

Meeting time starts at 6:30 pm.

Great meet-up. Thank you Erik
