Proposed talks

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

There has been discussion of talks for sometime, I have have lost
track a little regarding expected format etc. and I know that we don't
have a venue yet.
I thought however it would be worthwhile creating somewhere where
people could offer/discuss talks that they are prepared to give.

Assuming a format of 20 - 30mins rather than lighting talks, I would
like to talk about the the possibly changing significance of Views in
Drupal.

The title would probably be something along the lines of Views vs
EntityFieldQueries very looesly developed from my initial rough
thoughts here
views vs entityFieldQuery pt1

but not just restricted to EntityFieldQueries and as replacement for
many tasks that are often solved with views. I know things are not not
black and white in real life but hoping for at least a little
controvosy and interesting responses from the audience.

If a number of people are prepared to put forward talks there should
be enough able to talk at whatever time is finally fixed.

I for one would be very interested in hearing about code vs views. Good topic.

As for venues, the Stag and Hound do have a great presentation room, comfy chairs, great beers, food, AND it's FREE!

You do need to book in advance though (cuz it's obviously popular) and you do need to be able to put a few bums on seats, or it's a bit of a waste of the facility... I don't reckon that'd be tooo hard though??

Definitely

Yeah, that sounds like an great topic.

I've been doing some stuff with the field API to create custom fields, widgets and formatters if anyone is interested in hearing about how that all works.

The Stag and Hound sounds like a good venue - should we take a punt and book it? Maybe for a date in August?

Good idea

As we discussed at the last meet up, there's definite demand for this.

I'd be quite happy to do something on Twig, or maybe something else.

I would be interested in Twig

Bearing in mind some of the discussion on Themeing at the last meetup and reference to how things may get better (different at least) in Drupal 8, Twig is very interesting.

Installation profiles

I've started building an installation profile/distribution utilising Features to speed up our internal development process. Happy to do a talk about this, once I've reminded myself how I did it.

All sounds good

Sounds like we have enough talks, just the venue and audience to sort out.

I am beginning to suspect I may need to travel away to find work, although currently enjoying a bit a sabattical pursuing my own interests that can't last forever (unless I win the Lottery on Saturday ;)).

So personally I would prefer early Aug to ensure I am still around and wondering if we should be aiming at the usual time of the first Wednesday (should help with the audience as well).

Have no idea, but guess that might be bit short for booking the Stag and hounds, If a few people say YAAY to the idea though, I will give it a go.

Stag and hounds is good

Stag and hounds is good shout. I wouldn't have thought of there but sounds like all the things we wanted in a venue. It's right next to my bus stop too, so I won't need to stumble through castle park afterwards!

I'd also be happy to talk about something, although it sounds like we've got plenty of potential presenters. Maybe a bit of Drupal relief by way of JavaScript... or not :-D

Hope everyone had a good drink at the last Bristol meetup, I was on holiday.

A good drink was indeed had last Wednesday, indeed, indeed.

It does look like the time is right to get some serious talks on the schedule too.

I don't know how others feel about it, but I'd personally suggest holding them on a different night to the "social"? Possibly the second Wednesday of a month for consistency? That way the momentum of the Elephant attendance/discussion won't be shaken up..?

The user night can also then be used to drum up a frenzy of interest for talks the following week.

Totally just my opinion on it though :)

agree

think you are right about not replacing the socials

If we don't have enough

derekahmedzai's picture

If we don't have enough people interested to be able to book somewhere, let's just have it at one of our offices.

Does anyone know what the min

Joe Vallender's picture

Does anyone know what the min number they expect at the stag and hounds is? we'd have to book speculatively to have a chance of the room at all wouldnt we?

Stag-size

srlawr's picture

As an example, my colleague attended the last WebFolk talk night at the stag and hounds and had this to say about attendance:

"There were about 20 people there. It wasn't packed, but there were enough to make sure the room didn't look empty."

The room itself I believe holds up to 40-50 people (partly depending on table/chair/presention area layout). With the screen down, and rowed tables (for laptops and iPads) I imagine 20 would probably be a good audience.

Being a straight from work event as well, lots of people (I imagine) will order some of their delicious food, and some of us developer types will no doubt make a good run at the beer taps; and that's all they ask!

I know the landlord reasonably well (it all comes out now you see!!) so I can ask him totally speculatively about that second week in August next I see him.. if it's quiet anyway, I'm sure he won't mind at all.

great stuff

Sounds great

Second week in August works for me, and I concede the point about not diluting the current meetup.
