What's Drupal After Dark?

Drupal After Dark get-togethers have traditionally been social occasions where food and drinks are involved (and alcohol is an option). In the past we've met at places including the Boteco on Main St. in Alhambra. Elsewhere, we've met at the Outdoor Cinema Food Fest, the Good Hurt and Don Antonio's on the Westside and Masa in Echo Park, and good times have been had by all.

Drupal After Dark is part of a growing movement that includes Drinks and Drupal, Drupal Happy Hour and Brewpal meetups around the world.

About San Gabriel Valley Drupal

We've been having Drupal meetups in the San Gabriel Valley since June, 2010. In addition to scheduling monthly meetups, our organizers hold occasional trainings and workshops and get together for social gatherings.

Attending SGV Drupal events is one of the best ways to meet and talk with other Drupaleros and we encourage you to attend meetings and special events regularly. See our event schedule at http://groups.drupal.org/sgv for more.

Whether it's to find solutions to problems you've been having, sharing something you've learned or just meeting interesting like-minded people, the SGV Drupal events are an essential resource for Drupal professionals and hobbyists alike.

Howdy Steve.

I have a serious issue with your homophobic comments in this thread. This is an open forum, meant for open discussion built around open source software so shouldn't we be a bit more open-minded or mindful of what we say? I think we should. Especially, since this thread is for an event for friends/colleagues/drupalistas to enjoy a movie. I don't think these types of comments have any place here (or anywhere, for that matter, but that's just me) & I'm sure many other organizers & members would agree.

That said, I know you as a pretty good guy so I can only scratch my head & hope this is some type of error.

peace & love. :)

Many employers use GDO as a search tool for prospective applicants. That includes us. I would look at what you posted and think to myself..."hmmm...this guy's a walking lawsuit! This kind of behavior is going to offend another employee and I'll get sued for promoting a hostile environment. Should I hire him? Nope!"

Please consider this a professional forum. I would also suggest, on behalf of your future self who may want to get a job in Drupal someday, that you ask that this comment be removed.

That, and it's just so painfully not cool.

IMO, it starts with understanding that racism, sexism, homophobia, etc, aren't something you are or are not. There isn't a binary. We're all on a complicated spectrum, with as many axes (axees? axis-es?) as there are -isms, influenced by the way we were raised, who we interact with, history, and a wider culture that can reinforce positive and damaging attitudes and stereotypes. Even if we are working hard to be inclusive, or belong to one (or a few) marginalized categories ourselves, we can still hurt people, especially passively or accidentally.

As Jay Smooth says, we can go farther by addressing the action instead of some imaginary binary of "being" X-ist or not. And if people know that just addressing an action is not an attack on who they are, and a good faith mistake doesn't mean they'll be kicked out or publicly made a pariah, both personal censuring and the barrier to confronting incidents when they do happen will be reduced.

For example, in any situation where someone feels excluded but not threatened, I think we should encourage a conversation (whether face to face, casually mediated, or just through the grapevine) like:

A: "The way you [talked about, framed, illustrated something, etc.] made me feel excluded."
B: "Damn. Sorry about that, I didn't mean to. Thanks for letting me know, I appreciate it. I'll try not to do that again in the future."

I've messed up plenty in my life. Some great people have shown me that dropping my ego, admitting I made a mistake, listening, and saying sorry is almost always a good first step to making amends and reversing the damage (not to mention one of the better things you can do to grow as a person).

Hah

NOW THAATS FUCKING FUNNY!

Steve, what has happened here

christefano's picture

Steve, what has happened here is very unfortunate. Nothing about it is funny.

I've already been hearing from people who are disabling their notifications or leaving the groups this was posted to. I'm sure there are others who are just as offended by this but just haven't told anyone about it.

The Drupal community is many things to many people, but to me it is a safe and professional environment, and I'm not very persuaded by your "I'm so sorry" post, as it is also inappropriate and contains expletives.

I came very close to filing a request to have your account banned. If your account is ever used again to post anything inappropriate, I'll file that request without hesitation. This is your last and only warning.

stevethewebguy's picture

Submit me to be banned from GDO! I don't use this site much anyway! I was just trying to say what up to my buddies & hint that I might show up at the movies, fag. Fuck, either call me out directly on what you feel i did WRONG here OR untangle your damn man-panties, fuck censorship.

But, hey! If you really feel like you need to protect the drupal groups community from my vulgarity, OH GREAT DECIDER OF ACCEPTABLE DISCOURSE, by all means... GO AHEAD BRO! I THOUGHT WE WERE FRIENDS! NOW YOU'RE NOT GOING TO HIRE ME BECAUSE OF THIS DUMB SHIT TOO?? FUUUCK, I THOUGHT I KNEW YOU MAN, I NEED WORK! I DON'T NEED DUMB FLAMEWARS LIKE THIS ONE, I JUST WANTED TO SAY HI TO MY BUDS IN THE DRUPAL AFTER DARK GROUP, FUUUUUCK I'M SOOOOO SORRY I OFFENEDED.... NO ONE....

THANKS "FRIENDS" FOR MAKING ME FEEL LIKE SHIT & PAINTING MY COMMENTS AS ANTHING BUT JOKES AND LOCKER-ROOM TYPE RIBBING. WHATEVER, I THOUGHT I WAS POSTING AMONG FRIENDS.

Steve, I've filed an issue to

FREEDOM of SPEECH IS A BLESSING!

gaffyslick's picture

Freedom of speech is the political right to communicate one's opinions and ideas via speech. The term freedom of expression is sometimes used synonymously, but includes any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used. In practice, the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, as with libel, slander, obscenity and incitement to commit a crime. -wikipedia

I am blessed by Drupal groups and the people that come together to form it's existence. Let's not forget the limitations placed on such an awesome gift we so often take for granted. Stay cool...
