Hi All,
Just attended the ACM Conference in Portland and got pretty stoked about all Drupal has to offer. I work in a Windows environment and would like to start a virtual machine to get acquainted with the Drupal architecture and the more active functional modules. This seems like a good place to start.
Should I download Drupal first?
Do I need LAMP or WAMP or MAMP or what...lol...
Also, I plan on logging all my progress and challenges along the way to create some useful tools for non profit drupal roll-outs...
And by God I need as much help as I can get...
Thanks...

I'd start with DAMP
aka the Acquia Drupal Stack - http://acquia.com/documentation/acquia-drupal-stack. No need to set up an entire VM to get going.
On the other hand, it may depend on where you will be hosting your actual production sites and your comfort level with system admin type work - getting a handle on the setup and configuration on a Linux VM would make the transition to production less painless.
Thanks
I can use that locally on my laptop?

Yes
Yes, you shouldn't have any problems.
I only have a cursory experience with using it, please let us know how well it works. And if you have any problems, go ahead and ask.
