Wowzio User Generated Original Content

Introduction
Create a vibrant community of writers that generate high quality original content based on their passion, interests, experience & vocation.
Wowzio will :
. offer platform & tools to writers to create/update content, potentially rich in multi-media
. publish & manage this content on wowzio.com, eliminate spammy, non-original, bad-quality content
. offer writers a way to generate a recurring revenue stream from their content via advertising ( adsense & kontera ) and affiliate fees ( amazon & ebay ) on wowzio.com
. put it features that promote community and social interactions amongst writers & users.

Sign-In/Sign-Up & Forgot-Password for Writers
. upon sign-up, accept fields like 'first-name, last-name, email, password, confirm-password, accept-tos, anti-bot text, etc.
. send out a 'welcome' email that contains a url that the writer needs to click to confirm email account is valid
( message at this point accordingly, that they need to check their inbox, and if they don't see our welcome email, check the spam/junk folder, if they still don't see it, write to us at feedback@wowzio.com )
. ability to change passwords later
. ability to change emails later
. ability to change first-name, last-name later
. the canonical way to refer to a writer will be via her id, generated by the database.
. send a welcome email on sign-up
. 'remember me' check box should set a cookie for 15 days
. have a forgot password flow
. since there is an incentive to hack into accounts, if email is changed,
we need to send a notification to the old email account.
. if a writer changes any revenue related ids ( adsense ids, affiliate ids ... ) we need to send a notification to the current email account.
this we feel is a good approach, but if a given platform does it somewhat differently, we are open to other approaches as long as they are sound.

Writer's Profile & Ego Boosting Features
This will generally be found on the writer's profile page, as well as in other areas in the form of smaller modules. Things like :
. name, education, profession, current pageviews across all articles, etc.
. an image of the writer
. list of articles authored ( with pagination if needed )
. blogs that this writer likes ( upto 3 )
. compliments received
. complimented others

Revenue Generation for Writers
We will do a 60/40 split of revenues with the writers across all advertising ( adsense, kontera ) & affiliate ( amazon, ebay ) channels.
We will take a writer's account information for each of these channels, and use their account ids ( so the revenue is attributed to them ) 60% of the time that article is displayed.
The revenue will directly be paid to the writer by each of these channels and wowzio will not be involved in the payment, nor will it have any knowledge of exactly how much revenue a writer is earning.
However, Wowzio will keep track of its 40% revenue from each article, this will help it generate reports and forecasting.
Also if there is a way to attribute revenue at an article level, that would be very helpful in telling us which writers are generating good revenues.

Revenue Generation for Writers - Proceeds to Charity
For non U.S. residents, it might not be easy to earn revenue via some of these channels. It would be very good to have a list of international charities setup
( eg. 'red cross', 'greenpeace' , etc. ) that writers can pick from. But the challenge here might be how we do the attribution accurately.
( because not sure if one business ( wowzio ) can get multiple adsense ids, and if not, how does it split revenue with the charity, unless the charity has an adsense id and gives it to us )
one way to do the revenue split with charities is as follows :
. determine the total revenue every month, across all advertising & affiliate channels. lets call it tr1.
. for a given article, get the number of pvs that month. lets call it pv1.
. for all articles, get the total number of pvs that month. pvt
. for charity revenue attributable to that for-charity page, lets call it r1
( note 40 % of the non-charity articles and 100% of the for-charity articles carry wowzio ids )
using the above info., we could write a function to compute r1 for each article.

Article Writing & Editing - Various workflows
currently only the original author of an article will be allowed to modify an article
. each article will go thro' multiple workflows.
when it is originally being written :
in-progress, under-review, published, not-published ( flagged by moderators as spammy, duplicate, unsuitable-content, etc. )
when it has been modified it again goes thro :
under-review, published, un-published ( flagged by moderators as spammy, duplicate, unsuitable-content, etc. )
even when an article has been published, it could be flagged by community ( as spam, duplicate, unsuitable-content, etc. )
even at that time, it will go thro' a moderation workflow, the various states could be
( marked as good, until it gets edited again - in this mode, further flagging by community would be ignored )
( marked as not-good, need to communicate back to writer to take corrective action, un-publish the article )
this we feel is a good approach, but if a given platform does it somewhat differently, we are open to other approaches as long as they are sound.

Article Writing & Editing - Editor
The Editor that an article will be composed in, will be wysiwig in nature, and deal in html as its basic language.
It will allow operations like uploading an image ( from a local disk file, from the web, etc. ) and also options to resize/reorient the image, etc.
Next to the image will be a small caption that talks about the image ( see http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8196974.stm )
It will allow for embedding videos ( from youtube, videosurf, hulu, etc. ).
It will allow for embedding docs ( from scribd, docstoc ).
It will allow for embedding presentations ( from slideshare, any others ? )
Each article can also contain upto 5 tags, each tag is comma delimited
Initially, english will be the only writing language, but later we could open the platform to other languges.

Rules Based Automated Article Moderation
High level, there will be 2 sets of logic, one set that will execute when a writer hits 'save' on an article, so that the writer can correct any errors,
the 2nd piece of logic executes when the moderator is looking at an article, this is more for 'spam detection'.
. we should disallow shortened urls ( eg. bit.ly, tr.im, awe.sm, su.pr and many more .... )
. cap the number of links to amazon to 5 ( same with ebay )
. verify that the link is valid ( try fetching the url to make sure it exists )
. should we only allow links to product pages, if yes, make sure they are formatted correctly.
. make sure amazon & ebay links can be monetized ( i.e. affiliate ids can be inserted in them )

Messaging System between Moderators & Writers
looks like we would need this to communicate if any action is necessary on the writer's part.
eg. writer needs to re-categorize the article to a different category in the taxonomy
or writer needs to tone down on the offensive language before moderator can publish an article
Wowzio will send an email when such actions are required of the writer ?
In addition, we will update the status of articles on wowzio to indicate what actions might be necessary on the writer's part.

we will provide users the ability to post comments on articles

One Level Taxonomy
. will need the ability for writers to categorize articles into a top level ( one deep ) taxonomy/hierarchy.

Recent Articles Module
. the latest articles that have been written are shown in this module on the top page
. the latest comments could also be put in a module
