Drupal's 404 Error Handling

I wanted to raise the flag on a potential SEO problem with Drupal 4.7.5 and Drupal 5.0 with regards to 404 Page not found.

The issue has been discussed in detail and several patches have been put on the table. Here's where you can have your say and get involved in the action:

This is seemingly a concern, but the thread hardly makes for light reading.

What's the general consensus on the matter (from the point of view of a non-Core-head)?

... is there an interim generic solution for SEO conscious bods that can be used in the /admin/settings/error-reporting page to replace "nothing" in the 403/404 error boxes?

search404.module was nice, but obviously there are still concerns over it returning a 200 OK header at the mo, IIRC?

The search404 module now works fine under Drupal 5.1, as far as I can tell.
