During August 11-14 of 2013, Las Vegas will be hosting SXSW V2V, for the first time. Las Vegas Startups has more details. Probably many techies will be in town for that event, which will run Sunday through Wednesday. Hence, the Friday and Saturday just before it might be the ideal time to have the first Las Vegas DrupalCamp?!

I too am on the SxSW emails and I've been watching the Vegas communication coming in. I never once thought about capitalizing on this! [and i call myself a Drupal Evangelist!?!?!?]
OK... I'm done wipping myself now.
ALSO: This will [could be? should be?] dangerously close to the release date of D8. We can expect [hope for?] a pretty dog gone, stable version out by V2V. If D7 is any indication, then we may have some major site or sites already deploying on D8 by V2V just like the Economist.com did on d7.
How do we proceed?
One path could be... Take our current open-atrium installation that we used for planning VegasCamp 2012 and start a new V2V project and pick up where we left off. Similar elements remain like finding a VENUE, SPONSORS, FOOD, SPEAKERS, local accommodations, etc.
While I'm in Atlanta I'll russle up some support for this idea. I think this could be BIG! If nothing else.. it CERTAINLY is worth pursuing.
Let's get a sense of the local buy-in on this idea. Who has the time and is willing to commit it to getting this done? One thing is for sure... We're simply going to HAVE to have regular phone conference meetings. We really struggled with communication last time. So before you volunteer for anything make sure you don't mind spending an hour on the phone once a month. As the gig gets closer that will go bi-weekly, then eventually weekly. It's fine when ppl can't make all of them, but we really need to beef up our communication if we are to make another go around.

Now we'll sit back and see who's up for this. As I said, I'll see what kind of corporate buy-in I can get on this. I have to believe that this could rouse some serious interest from a lot of shops and companies. I'll report back here after Atlanta Camp is over.

This sounds like a good way to recoup the group's time and energy that's already been invested (similar to how Drupal Design Camp LA 2012 had a few stops and starts before we eventually pulled it off).

Theme

As with our previous attempt (DCLV 2012), I would be happy to create a theme for the event's website. If we decide to use the attractive header image created by Wendy, I would need a graphics person to change the date and location in the header image.
The previous site was built using Drupal 6, and it would be wonderful if the new site could use Drupal 7 instead. I was hoping that that theme was going to be the very last time I had to deal with Drupal 6. :-) On the other hand, it would save time to reuse as much of the previous site as possible. Jason, your thoughts?

I think it would be great to check in on the efforts that have been made on the port of COD from D6 to D7 and see how much effort will be needed to relaunch this thing on D7 and go from there.

I think this is a great Idea. Count me in for this too! I currently host/maintain all pf the sites mentioned above and will continue to help with any future needs for communication and site resources needed with regards to the Las Vegas Drupal effort. Let's do it!
My experience...
What I've seen is that some camps are taking the alpha OR dev release and using it as a starting point. Usually these teams building the website are quite handy and can put together what ever isn't working quite right.
Today you can take the D6 version and run with it.
Using the D7 version might require you to get creative if you find something not working the way you like.
