I have used phpBB for a long time and consider it the best GPL bulletin board system available. I wish I could easily integrate it into Drupal driven sites (currently 6.14.)
At first glance the phpBBforum Integration module seems to be the solution for D6; however, after closer examination it does not look very practical due to issues associated with keeping both platforms updated without breaking the site.
As much I love phpBB, I think I may have to go with the Drupal Advanced Forum module in order to get a more usable forum functionality for a site.
Vadim is doing great job with maintaining the phpBBforum Integration module; however, there is only so much one guy can do to keep up the pace with all the updates of Drupal and phpBB. More developers need to get on board.
I wonder if some type of co-operation between the Drupal and PHPBB developers would improve the current situation. I think it would greatly benefit and strengthen both communities.

We are successful using phpbbforum module on http://www.yafaray.org and besides it has little fix left we are very happy with it. Surely an official API from phpBB would be appreciated in my opinion (due to patching official code), but as a "user/sysadmin" I could say this module is doing his job very well. I greet vb for his work on this and hope to greet him officially.
By the way, I think explicit requests and (maybe) coding proposal would me more useful. Better would be post this on phpBB forum imo because drupal side nor phpbbforum (or whatever drupal module) can't do more on this.
