Event type:
User group meeting

When?

March 22nd and 23rd from 8:00am 'til we pass out
(or 7pm, whichever comes first)

What?

A gathering of Open Source content management systems and the geeks who love them: the conference open to all open source CMSes and will host several "sub-conferences" including Drupal's DrupalCon. You'll find a list of the subconferences to the right. Click on each one for specific information about what types of sessions are being organized for it. Feel free to create and account here to add your own session or subconference.

Where?

The Yahoo! campus in Sunnyvale, CA

Digg this event!

How much?

The conference is FREE (as in beer)!!! However in order for Yahoo to generate campus passes, we will require everyone to register. To register, please create an account for yourself on this site and then register here.

How do I get there?

Sunnyvale is in the heart of California's Silicon Valley. It is about a 30 minute drive from the San Francisco airport (SFO), a 40 minute drive from the Oakland airport (OAK), and 15 minutes from the San Jose airport (SJC). You will probably need a car, but several people are coordinating carpools, so if you need a ride, please post in the forums.

Where should I stay?

There are several nearby hotels. We are recommending the Sunnyvale Sheraton or the more budget priced Best Western. We will also be researching the possibility of a group room rate. Stay tuned.

The conference starts up early on Thursday and Friday (the 22nd and 23rd) so you'll probably want to fly in Wednesday at the latest.

What else?

We are looking for sponsors, so if you are a company looking to get some great exposure in front of a technical crowd, contact us for more details!

There are also a few adjunct events happening around the conference, so be sure to accommodate these in your travel plans.

There will be at least one informal Dojo get-together, so I'm looking fwd to meeting many of you in the IRL (as opposed to IRC).

I guess it's too late

mcurry's picture

I've been trying to sign up for over a week, no luck creating a new user account and registering - I guess it's too late for me... unless someone can suggest an alternative way to get in the doors. (HELP!)

I'd really like to attend - is there another way to sign up?

Me too!

I agree...I wrote them an email asking if there was some way I could get on an announcement list at least so I'd know if they open up any more spots (which they sort of imply on the site that they might) but they haven't responded, and nothing's changed on the site.

So...alas.

I love these tech conferences, but why do they always pick such small venues? Drupal is POPULAR people, let's have bigger events!

Unfortunately we're

Unfortunately we're overbooked as it is, and having to deal with that.

The venue was picked because Yahoo! offered, and that made the price Very Right. I think now that the Drupal Association is formed, future conferences can be bigger -- but we may also have to start charging a fee to pay for bigger venues, though we're hoping not to. It's pretty impressive what venues actually cost. A lot is going to depend upon what kind of sponsorship we can get. We're pretty sure we could easily have gotten 600 people for this event, which is kind of frustrating for a lot of reasons. That's a lot of people.

clarify

You might want to say that on the event website...the wording (about it "currently being closed" and waiting on Yahoo for a number) gives hope...which maybe is unfounded.

I totally understand the point about the cost of venues. Maybe if we can't make them bigger, we could try hosting them more often. I went to both of the DrupalCons in NYC (this year and last year) and really got a lot out of them. As I live in a place (Philly area) without very many Drupalers, I have to rely on these conferences for any real-life demonstration/networking around Drupal (witness the fact that I'm willing to fly to California for it!).

What about having coordinated DrupalCons in multiple cities, and then having coordinated events/chats/conference calls/online video sessions? At the NYC session this year we participated in the Dojo lesson for that day, and that seemed to work out pretty well.

We've been trying to secure

merlinofchaos's picture

We've been trying to secure more space from Yahoo (and got a little, but not enough) which is why the hope was held out. People are trying to figure out how to deal with this, which is why it hasn't been updated in a few days.

Very much appreciated

Understood, and in case I wasn't perfectly clear in my prior posts, any and all efforts to organize this event are, and have been, much appreciated.

(I was really interested in knowing if there was any way to sign up - or know if it is not possible at all - and it sounds like things are still very much unresolved.)

For the record, I'd gladly pay a reasonable attendance fee - I'm interested in this event not because it's free, but because it's in my neck of the woods!

In any case, I'll know to sign up immediately next time.

Thanks, "merlin"

other locations

The distributed conference seems like a natural progression for this community. Does it have to be limited to Yahoo? Sessions could be held at say, community centers, libraries, local businesses that are planning on attending, hotels where attendees are staying near by, even people's houses that live near by, all powered by ad hoc ride sharing and emergent organization of the likes that sweet sweet Drupal empowers.
