Join us on Tuesday evening, January 15th at 6:30pm for a Brevard County (Space Coast) meetup. The topics for the evening will be:
- Maggie Ardito suggested a discussion about Drupal owner/operator user groups (her comment below). This will not be a presentation, but rather a group discussion.
- James "the quack" Dinsmore will present on setting up Virtual Box Drupal development environments. James is currently interning with WebEnabled.com, so this will be a good opportunity to learn from someone who has been working with virtual environments on a daily basis. James' slides are now available.
Feel free to volunteer to present or request topics in the comments below. As always, we'll also leave some time for some free-form discussion about any Drupal-related topic.
The meetup will take place at Ryan's Pub (above Ryan's Village Pizza) in Cocoa Village. Food and drink will be available from the resturant, come hungry and grab a bit to eat during the meetup.
WiFi is sketchy at this location (but the pizza is definitely not!)

Setting up VirtualBox Drupal Dev Environments?
I don't know if people would like to hear about my exploits in experimenting with multiple virtual development environments (DP QuickStart, TurnKey Linux DP, virtual Ubuntu LAMP, etc.); but I have worked hard to succeed in discovering reliable ways to set each of these up and to document the recipes.

On another note: I would love to have somebody explain the brass tacks of taking a site you have built for a client and deploying it: what you have to go through to put it on a commercial server, getting a domain name, handing over the 'keys', (giving them ownership of it) , how on-going maintenance is handled, etc.) [Things I know nothing about].

Topic for discussion - Site Owners network
I have an unrelated topic that I'm hoping we could spend a few minutes on. I'm looking for Drupal User contacts. I know nearly everyone at the meetup is a developer focused on the technical aspects of building sites for clients. This seems to be true in the entire Drupal Community. I've had trouble connecting with people/organizations who are both owner and developer. Yet I know these people exist... (e.g. warmshowers.org - a huge, complex very high-traffic Drupal site.) Also a lot of non-profits use Drupal with self- and volunteer development. Yet it seems hard to connect with these kinds of people and organizations. Does anyone know any Drupal Users organizations? Or anything more application-oriented? A related question... what has been the follow-up with the coding for a cause clients? Have they been able to take over development of their own sites?

I know the owner/client of http://feedfloridafirst.com, one of our Coding for a Cause clients has been successfully using her site for the past year or so.
As it stands, that is the only one of the three sites that has launched. It hasn't been for a lack of our end though, the other two organizations haven't quite been able to get their sites deployed due to internal issues.

I think Maggie's idea for a discussion is a good one as well - it's not really presentation-based, but I think it'll make for some interesting conversation.

OK - this will just take a minute to see if anyone is interested or knows of any application-content related people or groups. Or any micro-businesses or non-profits who might be struggling with these kinds of issues - getting things done on a small budget. Or if anyone wants to make a presentation related to site extension and content creation and management, including how to elicit content from users. And how to get help when you need it. Maybe we could organize a panel discussion for next time if anyone is interested.

Oh, and thanks Ben for the link to the site. It's a really well designed, attractive and functional site so kudos to the group that accomplished it! Have they indicated desire to extend the functionality and encourage more interaction and if so how they would go about it?

I think for now, she is quite happy with the site as it is. Feed Florida First is a very small non-profit that is run by just one person. She doesn't have much of a budget either, so any updates or extension of the site would probably be done by someone who volunteered to do it.

Yet another fun meetup in Cocoa Village last night - we had 26 attendees (pic or it didn't happen - https://twitter.com/ultimike/status/291343890399764480/photo/1) who enjoyed the great food at Ryan's Pub as well as some great Drupal discussions and presentations. We had some new faces - it's great to see our local community continue to grow!
Kudos to James "the quack" Dinsmore for an outstanding VirtualBox presentation at last night's meetup. I think it's safe to say that many of us are going to start using VirtualBox more and more moving forward (especially now that we know we have several VirtualBox experts in the area!) Also, I'm glad he didn't have to throw the duck in anger.
Also, thank you to Maggie for a thought-provoking discussion about Drupal site owner-operators and their unique perspective. We decided that we'll attack Maggie's request on two fronts:
Also, we're going to make sure that each meetup includes at least one "back to the basics" Drupal presentation to help Drupal owner-operators manage their site better. Cielo has graciously volunteered to present on Drupal's block system at the next meetup.
The next meetup is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, January 31. Once I have the venue confirmed, I'll post it on http://groups.drupal.org/florida.
