Drupal Apprenticeship scheme

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Over the past few months we've been working on starting an Apprenticeship scheme between some London based companies, I've included a press release below which should explain what we're going to be doing.

We've had a very positive reaction from the Drupal community so far, as well as from many other people, and it would be great to hear people's thoughts on this, and hear from anyone who would like to become involved.

INCUBE8 Drupal Apprenticeship

Authors: Hedley Smith, Agile Collective (http://www.agilecollective.com) & Araceli Camargo, The Cube (http://www.thecubelondon.com) / INCUBE8 (http://www.incube8.org.uk/)

January 2013

There are two major issues we’re faced with today, one as a society: youth unemployment, and one as the Drupal community: a lack of talented Drupal developers. The co-working & innovation space THECUBE & Drupal web development co-operative Agile Collective will be launching a pioneering Apprenticeship scheme to try and help tackle both of these problems, in partnership with several London based organisations utilizing Drupal, focusing around the East London area.

East London has been thriving as an entrepreneurial community for the last 5 years and it seems to be reaching its peak with the advent of Tech City. However great this is, there is an increasing economic and cultural disparity with some of the most disadvantaged young people in the UK next door. With youth unemployment now at an all time high there is a need for more economic equality to create a better future for the area. The INCUBE8 Drupal Apprenticeship is aiming to be part of bridging this economic disparity. We’ve spoke to a number of figures in local authority including Shawne Keck, the economist for Hackney, and they are all in support of a scheme like this. After such positive feedback we will be partnering with a local NGO and applying for government funding for the project.

Our plan is to bring together several Drupal companies to work together on the scheme, these companies will have an input into the planning of the scheme and will work together with the INCUBE8 team to take the apprentices from initial training through to placements within their companies.

The first phase of the scheme will involve a neuroscience based selection process to find the best candidates, from there the apprentices will be put through a one week industry preparation programme which has been run as ‘INCUBE8 Lab’ previously and the group will be narrowed down further. The INCUBE8 lab includes a neuroscience foundation to prepare the candidates for employment, followed by collaborative and professional skill training. Foundation training in web technologies & an introduction to Drupal will then take place and from there the apprentices will be given placements within the host companies and be assigned mentors. They will participate in further training coming back to THECUBE regularly for support & group exercises. The aim of this process if for the apprentices to then go into full time employment within the host companies.

We’re like to hear from London based companies who use Drupal and would be interested in becoming a part of this scheme, and organisations who have an interest in supporting the scheme in anyway. This is an exciting and unique opportunity to be part of a pioneering scheme which will shape the future.

The curriculum materials we’ve been developing will be freely available online and form the basis of a open learning space to encourage and help others wishing to run apprenticeship schemes or use the materials to train. We also hope to use this online space for the apprentices to collaborate, learn together and contribute back to the materials themselves.

This scheme is being planned and organised on a non-profit & voluntary basis.

This sounds great!

Thanks for posting this, sounds like a great initiative!

I only entered the 'professional' programming world because of a government-sponsored course for AS/400 RPG programming back in '91 - I didn't have a degree which all programming jobs at the time were asking for and this gave me a marketable skill plus work experience to boot.

All the best with this initiative, I shall be following progress and seeing how we could do something down here in Brightoncisco.

Thanks Steve, apprenticeships

Thanks Steve, apprenticeships seem to be a growing trend as a route into a career more recently, and I think it's great to give people to opportunity to learn such a specific and in-demand skill.

It would be great to create a scheme which could be easily set up and used by anyone!

Would be interested in this.

Would be interested in this. We already take on apprentices at Capgemini (not just for Drupal, but we have had some coming through on to our Drupal programmes) and are keen to try and help foster more new Drupal talent in the UK.

Would be great to find out a bit more about the ideas for the scheme and to see if we can help / be more involved in helping out.

Interested

Hi Hedley

Good stuff. As discussed in the meeting at the Cube about this last year with Ben and Aracelli, we are very interested. One of our clients (a large public sector organisation) is very interested in collaborating on an apprenticeship scheme and the avenues that this could grow into.

Let me know how we can help further and see you soon.

Regards
Leon

This is interesting and well

This is interesting and well timed. I've passed it up the chain to my bosses at the BBC.

Do you have a timeline for the above? It's likely to take months on our end.

Thank You

I can't thank those involved with projects like this enough. Having been forced out of college for financial reasons in 2011, my career path was completely shattered. When I began building websites as a freelancer, I quickly realized how much I would benefit from an opportunity to work with senior level developers on larger projects.

Thankfully, I found such an opportunity at the Drupal Association headquarters here in Portland, OR. I spent about six months there and now I'm writing this message from my desk at OpenSourcery.

I encourage everybody involved to keep moving projects like these forward, because they have a very real impact on people like me.

Thanks for sharing, great

Thanks for sharing, great story. Would be great to have some stories like this to share with others thinking about taking this path.

great initiative

Hi Hedley,

This is a great initiative. We've successfully managed to get interns without prior Drupal/programming knowledge into the game and will definitely help developing this approach further.

I'll get in touch, offline.

Expand and conquer!

I'm very interested in this as we can both find up and coming potential developers, and help the community grow its talent. We're based in Cheltenham so obviously the initial focus on a London-based scheme wouldn't apply to us, but I will follow this closely as we'd like to participate if it does head further outside the capital.

I'd echo Chris. We'd be very

I'd echo Chris. We'd be very interested in this as a model and looking to role something out in Newcastle. In 2014 we have 10 interns from Italy coming here from backgrounds of less opportunities. They will stay for 13 weeks in the city hosted by us so it could be that this will fit appropriately also.

Would also be very interesting for someone to come up North to our user group meeting once the project is running to talk about the experience. Keep us updated and congratulations on the work done so far!

Thanks everyone who has

hedley's picture

Thanks everyone who has provided such positive feedback! I'll keep everyone updated on any developments with the INCUBE8 scheme.

The bigger picture of creating an open and shared set of resources for apprentices, organisations and anyone else who wants to use them is very much open for discussion - I think a BOF at DrupalCamp London would be a good place to talk about this.

DrupalCamp London BOF

hedley's picture

I'll be scheduling a BOF at DrupalCamp London to discuss this further, probably on the Saturday. There's been a lot of interest in the initiative and we should have a starting point for an open Drupal curriculum and Apprenticeship set of materials very soon. We're still in the planning stages for the INCUBE8 Drupal Apprenticeship scheme and hopefully we'll have some more solid plans soon.

Thanks for the interest from everyone so far!

Very excited to get involved.

Very excited to get involved. I'm sorry Acquia is based in Reading so we can't take on interns in the program, but we can still collaborate on the materials. It's really exciting!!

The BOF at DrupalCamp London

hedley's picture

The BOF at DrupalCamp London was great! Raised some interesting questions and confirmed that we're heading in the right direction on a lot of things.

@Heather - Yes it's a shame we're having to keep it to London for the first round of INCUBE8 Drupal :( but the Open Drupal stuff is all very exciting and the bigger picture I hope can be that anyone from anywhere can work together and benefit from all of this.

We've now started a group &

hedley's picture

We've now started a group & initiative 'OpenDrupal' which you can keep updated on here: http://groups.drupal.org/opendrupal - we'll be building an open-source Drupal curriculum and toolkit to help companies to want to run their own internship & apprenticeship schemes and train people in Drupal.

We've now partnered with Shoreditch Trust to deliver INCUBE8 Drupal and we're looking for London based organisations who are interested in taking on an apprentice. The apprentices will have gone through some Drupal training beforehand and they will utilize the OpenDrupal curriculum. The INCUBE8 team will also be continually supporting both the organisations and the apprentices throughout the programme. If you're interested, please get in contact.
