Best way to echo drupal posts to social media?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Hi all
Sorry I missed Westport, was just too jet-lagged after coming back from USA.

Anyway, getting back into January's workload, I'd want to learn how to automatically post onto social media whenever new content is created on a D7 site. So, for example, a new Blog entry is created on the Drupal site, then a teaser for that entry would be posted on the appropraite Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts.

Haven't done this before, so am wondering how other people are doing it? Had a look at some of the social-media-specific integrations like Drupal for Facebook etc, but didn't find something more general.

Looks like one option is to create an RSS feed with views, then use a social media management tool like HootSuite (http://hootsuite.com) to take that feed and use it to generate posts on Facebook wall, tweets, etc. However I've just tried that and HootSuite isn't working right*
so thought I would see if other people have used other tools or approaches?

Thanks
Mike

*What I did: 1) Ran my RSS feed through a checker to be sure it was ok
2) Added my RSS feed to HootSuite, with setting to do it hourly.
3) Added new content to Drupal site so that RSS feed would have "fresh" content
4) Waited over an hour (there's no way I could see to force HootSuite to immediately pull a feed)
Result: Nothing.

Post to Twitter and let the rest run its course

markconroy's picture

I haven't done what you are asking above, but from "lateral thinking", my guess would be to use the Twitter module to post all posts automatically to Twitter and then have your Twitter a/c linked to your Facebook/Other social media a/c, so once it goes to Twitter it will automatically go elsewhere.

I would suggest the reverse, post to FB and let that do the hardwork, but at the moment, you can't auto post to FB pages (only to profiles) afaik.

We've used http://dlvr.it to post to both Facebook and twitter from RSS feed. It has worked ok on small scale sites - haven't tried it for large volume but you might want to have a look at it.

Hi

I have been using TwitterFeed (http://twitterfeed.com) - takes rss and posts to twitter, facebook and linkedin

Also used dlvr.it as Feargal says - both good services.

Hi, I am currently finishing

Hi,

I am currently finishing up an application that does exactly what you just described. It uses a series of module and posts to several social media outlets in one go. So, it is possible and the best way to go about it is to use hootsuite or hubspot as reference and then go from there to build it on drupal using modules such as statuses, drupal for facebook, twitter api, and the likes. There is also a need for sorting out the workflow as this means lots of nodes to digest at some stage.

Auto Posting ....

BeeOnLion's picture

Hi Mike

One of the biggest thing I noticed with Auto posting is that it looks just like that an Auto post ;-).

We had used twitterfeed to do this but decided that it was much easier in the long run to use the likes of TweetDeck or Hoot Suite to post to multipal accounts.
Not only did this make the social media interaction look a lot better (no sent by tags at the end of the social media post "sent by Twitterfeed" etc) but it also allowed us to think a bit more about what we were sending out & would it be suitable for this media.

At the end of the day if you are only going to be posting a few updates a day / week you would be better off actually being sociable & getting your client to do it themselves through the likes of TweetDeck (http://www.tweetdeck.com/) or Hoot suite (http://hootsuite.com/) being a personable on social media is key we have found.

At the moment we are looking into creating a Facebook Canvas page using Drupal for facebook http://drupal.org/project/fb to pull content from our blog to display on Facebook & this looks very promising

Thanks for everyone's input on this. We tried out hootsuite, had a look at twitterfeed, read lots of reviews, and in the end went with dlvr.it (thanks Feargal!); it has a good interface, is popular, and the main thing was that I got it working with a sample RSS feed very easily. We upgraded to the paid plan which gives us a bit more functionality and posting to google plus, which we wanted.

I take Tim's point to heart - I agree that an automated post has a lot less street cred than a "real" one; so we'll have to see how we get on with this.
Speaking of automated posts, I wonder if the search engines care, from an SEO point of view, whether links are from automated or manual posts? I would imagine they prefer manual ones, or will do so if they don't already.

Anyway, thanks again everyone, if you have any questions about dlvr.it, we should be in a position to answer them in a few months...
