Purchase Access to an Organic Group

Can someone please provide a prescription for using Drupal Commerce to purchase access to individual organic groups? Much appreciated.

While the solution I describe in details is not related to OG, it is still a path you can imitate in order to fulfill your goal.

I think I might be missing something - why can't you just use rules to add the group membership upon purchase?
