I am creating my first drupal site, and though I have created the pages, navigation (another topic) and am waiting on client to supply content, I want to get a better understanding on how to make my own sub-theme. I have a design I need to stick to and cannot find a theme to match it. Not that I like themes anyway, though my theme experience is from wordpress.
Any recommendations? I have been looking at zen and fusion, but can't tell which is better suited for a newbie to drupal like me.
Thank you!

No single answer, but some guidance.
Theming in Drupal is pretty different from theming in Wordpress. There's not going to be a single 'right' answer, though there are some themes that are likely to be better, or worse, for you depending on your skillset.
My first question for you would be: is this Drupal 7 or Drupal 6?
I'd suggest that you take a look at Emma Jane Hogbin's presentation from DrupalCon Munich on base themes, because she hit on some good ways to explain the differences between the major sets of base themes: http://munich2012.drupal.org/sites/default/files/slides/basethemes-hando...
Since you're new, some of the concepts here may not mean anything to you, and that's okay. In six months, they will matter to you intensely.
I find that Omega is really intimidating to new Drupalers, and I'd hesitate making it the first base theme you try. Zen is well-documented and stable (plus John is a lovely person!). Fusion works well if you expect your customer to want to be able to do some point-and-click changes from the UI after you turn in your work. AdaptiveTheme I haven't worked with personally but I've heard works quite nicely; don't take my lack of knowledge as a downside.
good start
Thank you! I will watch the video today. I appreciate your time. And I am on Drupal 7, by the way. Thanks again!
