Drupal Cape Town Meeting

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Start:
2009-10-21 18:30 - 22:00 Africa/Johannesburg
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

At this meeting we must chat about http://drupal.co.za, as I would like to hear your thoughts on the site and I also have a few concerns that we can bandy around. Other than that the agenda will stay much the same as always, an "informal" gathering of Drupal-ers :).

Would anyone be interested in having a sort of "training" meeting every couple of months where we would organise a training facility like UCT? For sustainance we would organise beer and pizza and everyone would just pitch into the piggy bank.

Place: Sinns Wembly Square, Gardens, Cape Town (http://www.sinns.co.za/directions.htm)
Time: 18:30 - 22:00

Agenda:
* Welcome/Introduction (perhaps we can try out name tags, like being in school again - lol).
* Drupal.co.za discussion (only 10 - 20 minutes).
* Break up into interest groups.

There are always guys around that are happy to help, so if you have something that is bugging you, bring your laptop along :)

I like the informal gathering type because we are not yet big enough to take over an entire restaurant and it is a little noisy for presentations. What do you think?

If you would like to chat about something to the group please leave a comment or contact me via my personal contact form.

Anything..?

perceptum's picture

Anything - hmmm.... the mind wonders at the possibilities! ;)

I think training is a rad way to forge the community. I do however think that for it to be valuable - we would need to get some pretty specific goals in mind - and figure out who can tutor / teach / train for the specific goals. Certain topics will need more time - and others less. Some topics lend themselves to "lecture" style howtos and others would be better breaking up into smaller groups.

Are there any specific things you (read anyone) want to achieve? Lets bounce some topic ideas around...

Unravel the drupal!

devicehandler's picture

I have seen mad things get done by hardcore drupal maniacs, anyway I think for those of us with issues they probably are around the theming engine and really getting into the drupal interior (not core) but for instance how come people have great looking panels and I just cant pull it off? On the subject of topics and ideas maybe we can take a que from books on the market and make some short howto's say like blueprints for business people, the potential to earn an income for tutors is there as well.

thats a good idea. Using

thats a good idea. Using Drupal is a very good place to start as it goes through fictional case studies and shows how Drupal worked in those scenarios. But there are also a ton of books on the market that cover Drupal from all sorts of angles.

The theme engine is slightly complex but is quite easy to tame, I find a great way to get into Drupal theming is to start with a wireframe base theme like blueprint (http://drupal.org/project/blueprint). There are a lot of clever things that you can learn from wire frame themes like blueprint or zen (http://drupal.org/project/zen).

Umm...

Umm seeing as I live in goodwood and have to get back to my humble abode and also s.a isn't the cheapest people ferring nations, anyone going my direction after please let me know

how many people would be

theamoeba's picture

how many people would be willing to pay for training.

Im not certain

Im not certain, I for one would be but my resources are very limited so I can't ask for much except generosity. Though Im sure other drupal user around the cape would welcome the idea. I put an ad on the site some weeks back looking for training got no good answers, Im assuming theres quite a good number of drupal users in the cape playing in the amateur league so lets see what we can do for those first. Then maybe as it progresses will for on more solid training who and whats and so on
