A meetup on 1 June?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I'm in Entebbe for a conference at the end of May, and am free on Saturday 1 June - the day before I fly back to Cape Town. I'm wondering if anyone would be up for a meetup or some training? I run trainings through SlingShot in South Africa - beginner, intermediate and advanced drupal stuff - and I'm also one of the organizers for the drupal South Africa group.

I've been involved with some big site builds, like etv (a national TV station), Design Indaba, Kamusi, Men's Health and others - and have learnt a lot!

So, I'd be happy to run some training, or simply meet up and chat drupal - would love to meet some of you and hear about your experiences with drupal and web development. I'm staying in Entebbe, but I gather most meetups happen in Kampala, so I can make a plan to get there for the 1st of June.

Let me know what works!

Thanks for your interest in the training.

Nice to have you in Uganda. Thanks for your interest in the training.

We(me and my workmates at Mountbatten Ltd) had scheduled a training on 7th June(Specifically for the ladies, just to bring them on board) and 14th June (Which happens to be a global training day and it will be for everyone) I can try and move the one that had to take place on 7th to 1th June.

Is that okay with you?

Training times

burningdog's picture

Oh cool - what times are you planning on running the 7th/1st June training? if you're already planning on doing some training then I wouldn't want to intrude; although I'm happy to sit in for some of the time, or join you near the end; would be nice to meet some drupal people and see some of Kampala too. I need to catch a taxi back to Entebbe at some point; do you know how late they run?

Thanks for the heads-up about the 14 June training - link is http://drupal.org/learn-drupal

I am still communicating with

benjaminkyta's picture

I am still communicating with the people who will sponsor the events to see if the new date can be confirmed. Meanwhile, under normal circumstances the training commences at 9am and ends at 2pm. That is for the beginners. Plus you wouldn't be intruding. We can find a way of doing it jointly. Its all good.

Sometimes training can stretch to late in the evening but i don't think this will because its an introduction to Drupal. Its a good practice to keep it short not to frustrate the trainees. Oh, and remember, this training is free!

How about a presentation?

burningdog's picture

Thanks Benjamin - it's my only day in Kampala, so was thinking of a 2 hour thing rather than a 4 hour thing, as it would give me a chance to look around the city a bit during the rest of the day.

Reinier mentioned that if I put together a presentation then that might be a good idea. How about "Speedy drupal! - using varnish, memcached, apc and php-fpm to get the most out of drupal"? It will be a more advanced session, but the concepts are fun and it shows some nice possibilities for making performant drupal sites.

Interesting attempt! Change

Interesting attempt! Change in plan. I am going to organize a meetup, but with people who have experience with drupal. (It will be very hard for beginners to benefit)

That said, go right ahead and prepare your presentation. Oh, and may be one other thing, "Best Practices in Drupal" or a couple of tips on how to make drupal development simpler, flexible and fun!

The time frame is okay with us. You can come and do what can fit in the 2hours. Its all good. So, what time will you be in Kampala? Is 9pm okay with you?

Responsive + sass presentation

Another idea is this: how about we both do a presentation? You could do something on responsive design (and Omega?) and I could do something on SASS (Reinier's suggestion).

What time will I be in Kampala? It depends on how long it takes to travel by taxi from Entebbe to Kampala and where I need to get to. You'd know that better than I would! And what time do taxis back to Entebbe run until in the afternoon/evening?

Did you mean 9pm or 9am?

Best practices - fun!

burningdog's picture

Hey, great idea re: Best practices: making drupal development simpler, flexible and fun! I have some nice ideas on that, from theming to Features and git, so could do something on that. I could touch on SASS too.

Lots of options, then!

Yes! i will be doing a

Yes! i will be doing a presentation. Responsive design with Omega is fine with me. It will take you about an hour to get to Kampala and 20minutes to get to our offices in Muyenga. And taxis can run till late in the night (sometimes close to midnight since 1st June will be even a weekend!)
I meant 9am in the morning. What time will your flight get to Entebbe?

Great!

burningdog's picture

Ok, 9am works - I'll need to leave Entebbe at 7:30am, then. Thanks for the taxi info - that really helps :)

I'm staying in Entebbe during the week leading up to the 1st, and flying out on the 2nd.

Hi Elias,

It will be nice to have you around. I will be creating a Events page tomorrow first thing in the morning. It will have the details. Meanwhile call upon all your friends preferably those who have used drupal before. Will keep you posted.

Event being created?

Hi Benjamin

Are you going to create the event?

benjaminkyta's picture

Yes! am going to create an event. My Boss has been pretty busy. I need to confirm with him about a few things. And this will be done first thing in the morning. One question for you: Is it okay for your training to be the first panel? That way you can use as much time as you wish. Plus there will be sometime left for question&answer.

Sure

burningdog's picture

Sure, fine with me. I'll plan on between 60 and 90 minutes, if that's ok? I can use as little or as much of that time as you like :)

Its alright
