Hey! It's been a while. Anyone up for a meet up this rainy June? I see the 20th in our future...anyone interested? If so, include a possible locale, cuz I don't care where. Topic suggestions would be good, too.
For me, my current thing is AJAX (would love an explanation as though I'm a 2 year old) - NO idea what the deal is with that. I just know it ain't workin' on my mobile. I have another issue, too, but one thing at a time.

I'd be up for a meet-up. But
I'd be up for a meet-up. But with my hyper-crazy life at the moment I could only come if it were in Hamilton (my wife's on call so if she get's called I'd have to rush home to take care of the kid).

I can relate. I keep thinking
I can relate. I keep thinking how great that meeting was at Slainte's, even without (or because of?) the lack of projector. I'd be up for that again.
Edit: Can I request a brainstorm on something, as a "topic"? I am getting super close to finishing my site, and I have a tactical question, concerning forms, and content creation. I have 3 content types, related to each other via Field Collection and Entity Reference. It's working well, except for a couple of things that I'd love feedback on, to do with user experience/interface/workflow. Is that possible, or of interest?
I find just about anything
I find just about anything related to user experience interesting.

I have a meeting on Thursday
I have a meeting on Thursday evening so I can't make it. Would next Thursday, June 27 work for people?
away
I am away for my birthday on the 20th, so the 27th would also work for me.
The 27th works for me, too.
The 27th works for me, too. (Happy b-day, LC!)
I can book Slainte's again.
I can book Slainte's again. How many should I make reservations for? Potentially 4 from this thread, plus a few more? If the upstairs isn't available we can probably just get a table anywhere.
The 27th sounds good, count
The 27th sounds good, count me in.
If people would be interested
If people would be interested in reviewing and giving feedback on the user experience of my band website as one of the topics, then my next question would be does Slainte have WIFI, or would I have to put together screen shots? I seem to remember we had connection, but wanted to make sure.
Suggestions for topic(s) would be great, if it's more productive being structured, or would you like to make this loosey-goosey and talk about any issues people are having?
I should be coming
Off on Friday, so great way to start the Canada Day long weekend.
27th works for me
I can be there.
June 27 - Slainte
I made reservations for Slainte. http://www.slainteirishpub.ca/index2.html
The upstairs room was not available but I did make reservations for a table for 10. We didn't use the projector last time anyway when we had the upstairs.
Thanks for organizing Dave.
Thanks for organizing Dave. Time for a real event node?

event posted
This is for realz now. https://groups.drupal.org/node/304203
regarding structured: I do prefer a structured presentation/discussion over a completely free conversation. I see these events (among other benefits) as opportunities for developing presentation skills. I think both the recipients and the presenter benefits from preparations and demos. Open conversation will also inevitably happen and that's good too. :)
Okay, so my next question
Okay, so my next question (sorry for all my emails thus far), since I'm a total newb in preparing a presentation of this kind (of any kind really). Would you like to see the website ahead of time? If so, because it's in development on Pantheon, what URL should I give so it's not a 404 later?
Also, would it help for people to know ahead of time some of the modules I used for the issue I'd like to cover for the most part?
And thanks from me, too, Dave, for setting up the event and location! I appreciate it.
I'll just speak for myself
I'll just speak for myself but i don't mind getting everything at the presentation. To be honest, I'm pretty busy right now so probably would not look at the site and modules ahead of time anyway. Looking forward to it though either way.
Follow up
Hey guys! First, thanks again for all your comments about my website at our last meeting. It was invaluable both for positive reaction, and for useful suggestions. From years of experience I am very confident in my print design ability, but from learning web development on my own I've never been sure if I'm doing it right. Standing in front of those of you with so much experience in web dev was intimidating, I have to say (going into the meeting I sincerely hoped I wasn't like those horrible American Idol contestants that made ears bleed - yeesh!). Seems so far so good with this rather large project of mine, though, so "phew" from me! ;)
Okay, so I'm back with a couple of questions:
Adam, you mentioned an ad service that was external to Drupal that you used. Can you send a link/info about that?
Also, am back to formatting my CCK forms after working through some tweaks elsewhere - someone had mentioned best practice for WYSIWYG tool bars. What should I include/leave out?
Anyone know of any "better way" of formatting the forms, other than CCK? It seems like I'm doing a lot of "background:none;" and such to hide the weird stuff that drupal puts in. Is there a better way? I was looking at this https://drupal.org/node/601646 yesterday, would this be the way to go, or do I continue with the CSS as I was doing?
Thanks again, guys! And thanks to those who offered me one-on-one help. I wish my life could accommodate that. I don't think Williams is open at 5am is it? ;)

(after the forms are formatted, I'm going LIVE! So close...)
Forms
As far as your forms go, you should be able to do most of what you need with CSS, and anything that falls out side of that (or looks to be really kludgy to achieve in CSS) I'd suspect you'd want to have a some hook_form_alters in either a custom module or your theme's template.php.
That said, knowing your project, I'm not sure why you'd need a whole heck of a lot of custom module code. I'd suspect you can get most of the way there with CSS.
I'm happy to take a look at what you're doing at some point.
Thanks Adam! I'll keep going
Thanks Adam! I'll keep going on the CSS then. Once I get further ahead I'll take you up on your offer and will show the result. Having managed to go without custom modules so far, why start now?

Ads
You could of course on the cheap use Google AdSense, but if you'd like more control and the ability to sell ad slots according to specific criteria (AND backfill empty ad spots with AdSense automatically) look at Google's DoubleClick for Publishers (DFP).
http://www.google.com/doubleclick/publishers/small-business/
There is a module for it as well:
https://drupal.org/project/dfp
However I'm not using it on my more heavily trafficked DFP sites because I wanted to do some lazy-loading of ads according to responsive breakpoints. To do so I used a technique detailed here:
