August Meetup

Be there or be ...... somewhere else!

Let us try to have a talk/presentation or two for August.

I can do the one on entities I keep threatening, any other offers? Indicate how long you would like to talk for (I can be adaptable anything from 20 mins to an hour depending on other offers). Even 10 mins could be enough to quickly present an idea or funky new module.

Please do indicate whether you can make it or not as soon as you can, a reliable indicator of attendance may help secure a better venue.

Venue: still to be decided.

Looking forward to seeing you all again.

Tumble weeds

chris_hall_hu_cheng's picture

I am not very spontaneous, definitely not interested in trying to give a presentation on the basis of let us try to to work out what we are doing a day before we do it.

I don't live in Bristol, I am prepared to try a find a venue but don't want to look stupid if I get somewhere on the basis of numbers and potential beer sales and five people turn up.

Surely someone has something to talk about that other people would be interested in? Although I suspect if there was a consistent structure, the less confident (me for example) would feel happier volunteering.

To be honest apart from the odd splutter the group is beginning to feel like a bit of an after-thought, especially compared with some of the supposedly small ones out there (with websites, active social media, blogs, structure, posted talks and media etc.)

Not trying to preach as I haven't exactly provided any solutions but if we are just going to meet up in pub and have a random chat with whoever decides to turn up then lets just do that and make it official :)

Tumble weeds still rolling...

I'm unfortunately not in town for half of that week, but certainly we're at a point where we need someone to coordinate these meetups if we want to have regular talks. Some groups even manage to get speakers involved via Google Hangouts if they're not able to travel to give a talk, and end up with a wider breadth of topics discussed that way.

Personally, I like the social side, and could help with co-organising things for more formal things if someone else was willing to as well, for the record.

I suspect that monthly seems to be too regular for talks for this group, at least for the moment. Bi-monthly seems to be the right stride. We can always do drinks in the months either side. Talks/meetups mid-summer also have a record of being low turnout affairs, as everyone has their own stuff going on at that point.

Hopefully others will chip in on this.

Keep rolling rolling rolling....

I'll be there for the meetup!

I'm happy with a mix of social and formal format alternating or just do a formal one when we've got enough speakers.

Maybe we could have a poll/post asking everyone what talks they would like to see and then anyone in the group with the knowledge could come forward and do a talk?

It might encourage people to come forward to do talks if they see something pop up that they have been working on?

I would be happy to do a talk myself, but I'm not 100% sure if I have anything that would be interesting to people in the group.

Cheers

I'd enjoy a beer

and saying hello to everyone. its been quite a while

Tom - i AM 100% I've got nothing to say that will be interesting to the group.. but I don't feel it will stop me somehow... :-S

A plan

chris_hall_hu_cheng's picture

Gone under the week now so a quick rambling suggestion:

Taking a lead from other groups (various technologies etc.) We have 'socials' no confusion beer and chat, can happen anywhere. I expect we can up these to once ever two weeks even if one person end up turning up at least then can have a beer and leave (pack a good book in you bag just in case).

We also have more organised 'planned' in advance talk/presentation meetups. We can define the scope of talks (getting involved in night of 'Lightning Talks') could be less imposing for most of us, ranging all the way up to guest speakers (in our current unorganized format they would be hard to attract).

Here is little rubbish for talk organising, maybe a trello board or similar.

We make some decisions about what else can be done (social media, perhaps a dedicated site etc.).

So how about this meetup being a social in llandogger with a little chat about what to do with the group. I will then write that up as a post here for anybody who isn't there to have a chance to input.

Sounds good to me Chris. We

Sounds good to me Chris.

We could ask Rich S if we could use Sift towers conference room for presentations and then pop off to the pub after on the 'presentation' nights if that suits people?

It would mean we have use of a projector and people may be a bit more encouraged to to presentations?

I'm doing some blue sky thinking to swipe the low hanging fruit while tying to synergise the key stakeholders into creating a targets driven para-dime here OK.

Excellent I think we have the

Excellent I think we have the core competencies to action the key deliverables going forward.........

Regarding the Entities thing

chris_hall_hu_cheng's picture

If you have the chance please respond to the poll I posted about Custom entities.

I have started a series of blog posts about Entities in Drupal, they won't be following a particularly logical order but expand on things that would have just occupied one slide or two before getting to the more interesting bits.

Be warned, I am not a professional blogger....
links to the current posts below:

I have also started on a series of demo modules for entities, nothing to see yet but will be somewhere on-line, when I get something useful starting to form.

If and when I have something more useful entity related it should be detail at http://chris-david-hall.info (very much wip).

Just wondering if there's a

Just wondering if there's a venue and time for tonight's meetup?

Somewhere in the nest of comments.

Llandogger Trow here.

I think it was in one of the rats nest of comments above, we were hoping to get some impetus and perhaps get some talks going somewhere, I think this evening some of us may be discussing how to get more organised about that over a pint or two.

Edit: forgot time, i will be there from 6pm (probably eating chips).

Ofifical time and place

Good chat

chris_hall_hu_cheng's picture

Small but perfectly formed joined by the guys from Brightpearl and dominated by the Microserve posse had some drinks and a chats about:

  • GitFlow
  • Features
  • Custom Entities
  • Continuous integration
  • Drupal 8
  • Contributing code and patches
  • Halogen ovens
  • HGV driving
  • The nature of Geeks (of course nobody present was actually a geek)
  • Interrogation techniques....

All present agreed that it would probably work to move to once every two weeks (a social turn up if you are free and want to chat but no predefined agenda).

Then re-organise one of the socials in to an evening with talks when there is enough interest gathering.

It appears we also have an offer of somewhere with a projector, I will try to confirm and get a talk evening set up for first Wednesday of Sept, I don't have the ability to change the group details though. Thinking the socials could default to first and third Wednesday every month at Llandogger Trow.

All in all a very enjoyable evening, but too few for big presentations to be worthwhile.

Sounds brill to me, I'll

blacklabel_tom's picture

Sounds brill to me, I'll chase up the projector at my end.

I'm going to be on holiday for the September meetup, but I'll be up for a talk at some point. Probably about commons or I may have a crack at some Drupal 8 stuff.

Halogen ovens

nijk's picture

Thanks for organising these meetups Chris. It was great to meet you all and chat about such a variety of topics - I'm gutted I missed the Halogen Oven topic though.

Only a very minor query, but can I ask: could it be productive to meet in a slightly quieter (and warmer) venue?

It looked as though a few people were straining to hear conversations as other people behind us in the pub scraped their chairs across the tiled floor.

Perhaps try around the corner in pub

chris_hall_hu_cheng's picture

The Llandogger is a bit like a tardis, we probably could have gone around the corner in there and had a much quieter, warmer? time, you are right I was missing the odd sentence. Blame those crazy guys from Microserve they chose the table and bought interrogation into the mix.

Should be quite easy to switch venue for the socials if not so good next time.
