OpenScholar has many great features for which I'm looking. However, after days and days of trying I've been unable to get OpenScholar to install. I've read all the documentation I can find and followed the instructions as best I could but have still not been successful. I've tried with both Acquia Dev Desktop and online at my hosting account. And, while Drupal installs successfully, OpenScholar doesn't.
I think I must be missing something crucial.
I would appreciate any help. I am a neophite with all this... so please make it plain and simple. Thanks.

I have tryied from github or from havard website and got nothink! From git, I am not sure if I install drupal first, if I drush, if I run that script to build it.... But, I will do it!

The easiest way to get started is with the latest release here: http://openscholar.harvard.edu/download We've already downloaded drupal, run the build script, and packaged everything up into a file for you to download.

Start with that, put it in a folder apache can see, and browse to install.php. If you get stuck, we're happy to help but you'll need to be specific.

Thanks, jsaggotsky...

I am using the latest release... am trying yet again. I'll let you know how it goes.

I am wondering whether "Build openscholar by running ./scripts/build (drush required)" means use the drush to exexute the script command "DRUSH make --no-core --contrib-destination drupal-org.make"? And when I build the openscholar, so many errors occured, such as some patches cannot download. Thank you for your answer.

@what_ever, you're more than welcome to run scripts/build in a terminal but it's recommended to download the latest pre-built tarball from http://openscholar.harvard.edu/download instead.

Thank you for your last answer, I'm very glad to know someone who can solve my problem. However, I can't find the pre-built tarball you said from http://openscholar.harvard.edu/download.

still cannot install OS

what_ever's picture

hello jsagotsky, I've tried to use the version of OS you recommended last week, but I still cannot install it. Is it right the pre-build version doesn't need to be build? And I tried two ways to install it. First, I extract the OS and put it into a folder called "os" into the documentRoot. Then I ran "localhost\os\install.php" directly in the browser. In this step, after I choose the language, it cannot get through the following step "verify requirements", there's no error message, just failed. Second, I download drupal 7 first, and put the extracted OS file into drupal/profile, and install drupal like a standard one, and choose "openscholar" as my profile. However, after choose language, it showed "the profile you choose cannot be loaded". Which step did I do wrong? I'm really frustrated now, please reply my questions. Thanks.

@what_ever I'm out this week

jsagotsky's picture

@what_ever

I'm out this week recovering from surgery so I can't reply promptly.

 1. The archive you downloaded included drupal, so there was no reason to get a second copy of it.

 2. What's your setup? Based on the forward slashes I'm guessing windows. What are you using for an OS, server, and database?

 3. Did you check the server's logs after the installer failed? Uncaught exceptions and fatal errors will wind up in there.

As a side note, if you can do steps 2 and 3 preemptively in future posts, you'll get faster responses.

Hi to all,

I'm trying for the last weet to install prorperly the openscholar distribution (both 3.5 and 3.6 versions) but for all cases I get a lot of installation warnings (and for the 3.6 version I get that it is not possible to load the profile, during the installation).
My main problem is after completing an installation (with all the warnings) I'm not able to set front page or change the main theme without geting errors.
I already tried Windows intallations (apache, php, mysql) Aquia Dev and ubuntu server environemnt.

Can someone tell me how to perform the installation correctly and how to change the main front page?

My best regards,
Eduardo Catarino

Did you download the complete

Did you download the complete package like jsagotsky mentions above? if you are downloading from the git repository you will need to run build.

Installation complete

Hi rbrandon,

Thanks for your quick answer. I managed toend the installation on the ubuntu environment. I git clone the ropository and then did the ./scripts/build and then then the ./scripts/setup. Then I did simbolic link from www created to the apache /var/www directory.
After that I did the installation as it should be and finaly it went all to the end.

Thanks for your help,

I used the version given in the link (with the step-by-step explanations given). Had the same error mentioned above (and below).

 • AJAX HTTP error
 • Notice: Undefined index: insert link into wysiwyg in user_role_grant_permissions() (line 3074 of /home/content/m/e/a/meandgod/html/meanderon/modules/user/user.module).

Downloaded the latest version of the Drupal and the place the latest version of Openscholar in the profile folder, and did the installation again. Had the same errors.

still stuck

franji's picture

I've just downloaded the latest and greatest openscholar-7.x-3.6.tar_1.gz (19Jul13 release). I can extract the archive with 7-zip but can't figure how to extract everything out of this extracted archive. I'm sure I was able to extract the earlier gz archive out into the relevant folders. I must be losing my mind. Can someone refresh my memory as to what I do next? Thanks.

Blessings,
Fran

okay... so I figured it out

franji's picture

The .tar_1 confused the unpack programs. I tried both 7-zip and winzip before I finally was able to get 7-zip to do the job... I hope I have better and quicker luck with installing it all at my hosting provider.

franji's picture

I've just tried an install of this latest openscholar-7.x-3.6.tar_1.gz (19Jul13 release).
All seemed to go well until I got the following message after site install:
An AJAX HTTP error occurred. HTTP Result Code: 200 Debugging information follows. Path: http://www.meanderon.com/install.php?profile=openscholar&locale=en&id=1&... StatusText: OK ResponseText: 17 gid=684291733 18 uid=1961220853 20 ctime=1374611207 20 atime=1374611207 24 SCHILY.dev=234881028 23 SCHILY.ino=23035856 18 SCHILY.nlink=1

It seems that only 49 of the 146 modules were installed. Why didn't it install all the modules? What does the error message mean and how can I fix it?

and on the error page:
17 gid=684291733 18 uid=1961220853 20 ctime=1374611207 20 atime=1374611207 24 SCHILY.dev=234881028 23 SCHILY.ino=23035856 18 SCHILY.nlink=1

Then, I was able to continue onto the configure site stage after going to the error page. All progressed to install supplemental modules then the next error message:

An AJAX HTTP error occurred. HTTP Result Code: 200 Debugging information follows. Path: http://www.meanderon.com/install.php?profile=openscholar&locale=en&id=2&... StatusText: OK ResponseText: 17 gid=684291733 18 uid=1961220853 20 ctime=1374611207 20 atime=1374611207 24 SCHILY.dev=234881028 23 SCHILY.ino=23035856 18 SCHILY.nlink=1

and on error page:

Then in pink box:
Notice: Undefined index: insert link into wysiwyg in user_role_grant_permissions() (line 3074 of /home/content/m/e/a/meandgod/html/meanderon/modules/user/user.module).

And not pink:
SQLSTATE[23000]: Integrity constraint violation: 1048 Column 'module' cannot be null

And that's where everything stopped, so only installed 60 of the 67 modules.

I had selected to import dummy content but never arrived at that point.

Help! What to do?
Franji

PS: sorry about the formatting... not sure what happened there.

extracting tar.gz

kosyak's picture

Hi. First of all sorry about my little English.

I had same problem with installing OpenScholar on my Home PC with Windows 7.
I tried WAMP and XAMPP...with almost same result. With XAMPP it was exactly same problem.

But. On my Work PC with Linux (Ubuntu) I installed OpenScholar successfully without any problem during installation.

I lost few days to understand what are difference between installations.

And there is... Extracting tar.gz.

On linux I used command: tar -zxvf filename.tar.gz
On Windows I used for extracting 7-zip

As I understood 7-zip have some problem with extracting this type of archive.

[Solution]
After downloading this openscholar.tar.gz to another Linux machine (not my Work PC), after extracting this archive there and copying extracted files to my Home PC with Windows I successfully installed OpenScholar.

I think this should help you.

P.S.
Why OpenScholar-Command not give to download zip and tar.gz same time?

I was using 7-zip previously as well.
(Side: I've had some trouble with 7-zip and other software too, but had no error messages with OS)

With your advice I extracted using tarfile in python.
That made a huge difference, it installed just fine on XAMPP.
I do have several strict warnings that did pop up, through installation and now in the OS platform.
Most of them appear to be associated with:

Strict warning: Declaration of osTasksNodeCreate::execute() should be compatible with og_task::execute($entity, &$context) in include_once() (line 27 of C:\xampp\htdocs\os\profiles\openscholar\modules\os\modules\os_tasks\includes\os_tasks.task.inc).
Strict warning: Declaration of osTasksNodeVocab::execute() should be compatible with og_task::execute($entity, &$context) in include_once() (line 50 of C:\xampp\htdocs\os\profiles\openscholar\modules\os\modules\os_tasks\includes\os_tasks.task.inc).

However I have enough access and functionality to play with for now.
Thanks!

Max_execution_time

Elem Enoh's picture

I first increased my "max_execution_time" in the php.ini to 300 seconds, I still had the same error. I increased to 3000. That error went away for me.

This is with xampp on a vista machine in IE9.

Try without dummy content?

Franji, I'm trying to duplicate the error you're seeing.

Until then, will you try without enabling Dummy content?

Dummy Content and PaxHeader

franji's picture

Baisong, thanks for your response. I'm almost ready to try again.
The openscholar-7.x-3.6.tar_1.gz (19Jul13 release) that I used had a PaxHeader folder in every folder. I think that's part of the problem. I've stripped out all the PaxHeader folders and have almost finished a new upload to a fresh new folder.
The link you gave is the one I've been using.
Blessings,
Fran

Tried and failed... yet again!

franji's picture

Baisong, I'm not getting anywhere! Here is the result of trying without PaxHeader folders and I didn't even get to the selection for dummy content.
During site install:
An AJAX HTTP error occurred. HTTP Result Code: 200 Debugging information follows. Path: http://www.meanderon.com/install.php?profile=openscholar&locale=en&id=1&... StatusText: OK ResponseText: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING or '(' in /home/content/[...deleted ...]/meanderon/profiles/openscholar/modules/cp/modules/cp_appearance/cp_appearance.module on line 9

I continued to error page which had the following:
Elysia cron installed. Setup could be found at Settings page. See INSTALL.TXT for more info.

then the pink box message:
Notice: Undefined index: insert link into wysiwyg in user_role_grant_permissions() (line 3074 of /home/content/[...deleted ...]/meanderon/modules/user/user.module).

And then:
SQLSTATE[23000]: Integrity constraint violation: 1048 Column 'module' cannot be null

Went to settings page but get ACCESS DENIED message because "You are not authorized to access this page."

That's it... dead in the water yet again.
I'm totally unable to understand what the problem could be.
In the setup database section, in the advance section, I changed localhost to hostname my provider gave when I setup the database. BTW, my provider is GoDaddy.

If you, or anyone has a clue as to what is happening I would love to solve this problem. I've tried endless solutions over the past several weeks and gotten nowhere.

Thanks in advance,
Fran

Installation on PHP 5.2.17 - use() not recognized

vivdrupal's picture

Can somebody guide me --

Could finally get OS installed on a shared Linux host running PHP 5.2.17 - after extracting the files on the server itself and altering the lines 9 and 10 of cp.appearance.module to the following (as original use() is not working on PHP 5.2) -

vivdrupal,

It looks like our version requirements are out of date. Does your shared hosting let you use php 5.3 or higher?

I have the same installation problems

frustrated's picture

I have the same installation issues mentioned above.

 • AJAX HTTP error
 • Notice: Undefined index: insert link into wysiwyg in user_role_grant_permissions() (line 3074 of /home/content/m/e/a/meandgod/html/meanderon/modules/user/user.module).
 • SQLSTATE[23000]: Integrity constraint violation: 1048 Column 'module' cannot be null

With some tweakings I was able to build the site, but it does not do much. It has bunch of "Missing Feeds plugin OsImporterNodeProcessor"s with some other errors, so I cannot upload files, I cannot make front page, bio, etc.

I tried to install the versions mentioned by @baisong and @jsagotsky. Also I tried installing latest version of drupal with latest version of openscholar in the profile folder.

I even tried my hosting company to install the Drupal, then tried to add the openscholar. Could not make the openscholar module to work.

I have knowledge about website codings, but I don't know linux (in a comfortable level), and did not tried Drush. I used the basic "transfer necessary files using ftp and run the /install.php" method for the ones I install Drupal by myself.

All of the detailed troubleshooting methods involves linux coding, at least the ones I was able to find, so I could not follow them.

Can anyone please direct me how I can overcome the errors I keep receiving, before I give up on openscholar? Do I have to use Drush for a smooth installation?

Thanks
