Online map to mobile map, possible?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I have made this site http://beta.findtoilet.dk/ and think it would be great if I could use same database and info just smaller like this http://tinemuller.dk/div/mobile.gif

Know I need to hide a lot of top and buttom menu and change CSS for left menu and map and also InfoWindow but do you think it could be used on Smartphones?

An Android app is being made at the moment http://tinemuller.dk/findtoilet/android_app_beta/ but take years to get it working and don't like to think about ALL the other apps I need to make so would be great if my idea could work. Would love to hear your opinion, please?

Check out Adaptive themes

Bob Newby's picture

Hi Tine,

My D7 site uses an Adaptive theme (see https://drupal.org/project/adaptivetheme), specifically the paid AT Headliner theme (see http://adaptivethemes.com).

I do not use anything other than the theme itself to be able to present maps, other images, content, etc. across desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone browsers. If you spend some time browsing https://luthierbuilt.net you will see AT Headliner at work -- along with a number of Drupal modules, including Views, Display Suite, and Panels.

Let me emphasize that what you see is one and the same site across all modern browsers and devices.

Perhaps this knowledge will be of use to you.

Regards,

Bob

Consider optimising your mapping API

rdeboer's picture

As Bob points out, a responsive mobile-first theme would be a help.
Secondly, you may want to have a look at a mobile-optimised mapping API, e.g. Leaflet. You can still use Google tiles with that, if you must, if you also enable Leaflet More Maps. Finally, to make Leaflet really shine, with marker differentiation, tags, tooltips and centering options, consider adding IP Geolocation Views & Maps to the mix.

Thanks @Bob and @Rik for your

Thanks @Bob and @Rik for your info but I have now used several years, many money, blood sweat and tears to get where I'm now and I really think I have made a great project and haven't seen some similar Drupal sites with maps that can do ALL the great things my map can. :-)

You can see how it's functioning in the first video http://tinemuller.dk/findtoilet/VIDEO/ and I have made this document http://www.tinemuller.dk/findtoilet/why_it's_unique.html telling why I think findtoilet.dk is unique and different from other apps if you would like to know.

What would be great is if I could share content type "Toilet" and all the data tables that are used for this so it can be shared on a mobile site. Maybe also need other tables but don't think the whole database because I will change a lot on mobile site. So when a council is posting, updating or deleting a toilet it's automatic also updated/deleted on mobile site. Maybe it can't be done but hope you understand what I would like to have?

There is a LOT more info in this GoogleDoc http://bit.ly/mPZpyT for the interested. :-)

I think Bob and I were saying the same thing: that you can continue to have your single site, single backend for both mobile and desktop. Just upgrade your theme to a responsive one (with some added trickery).
Then performance test on mobile devices. If the site is already fast enough, then you're done. If not you may be able to improve the bottlenecks. If that isn't good enough it may be time for some drastic architectural changes.

@Bob and @Rik Would any of you or other in this group could make this happen with my site, please?

I have found these videos http://www.lynda.com/Drupal-tutorials/Responsive-Design-Drupal/107419-2.... made by Chaz Chumley https://drupal.org/user/343808 and would maybe be a good start for me to get an understanding of responsive design so I can go further with my own project?

Have any of you watched these videos and have comments to these, please?
