Images don't display 7.x-3.6 (Edit: Now 3.7.4) (Edit: Unable to duplicate problem)

I recreated the site from scratch from a virgin installation of the 3.7.4 prebuild and did not have the same problems detailed below.

I built the original site from 3.5, upgraded to 3.6 where I enabled a lot of modules related to news feeds before upgrading to 3.7.4. Perhaps I messed something up.

In anycase, creating the site from a new installation resulted in a site which did not have the same issues.

I am using OpenScholar 3.6 (Edit: Now 3.7.4).

I am having trouble with images not showing up in Media Galleries, embedded in text and as the attached photo in News.

In the Media Gallery only a link appears. The link takes me to the image but a thumbnail is not shown.

Embedded in text it shows as a broken image when editing; nothing is shown when out of edit mode.

The attached photo appears as a broken image in edit mode and nothing out of it.

The behavior changes depending on if the site is created as a subsite or as a stand-alone site. My project site stand-alone will display the attached photo but project site sub-site won't. Also the sub-site is the one that doesn't display the Media Gallery. The stand-alone's Media Gallery shows images. However neither allows the images imbedded in text (broken image).

Have I broken something?
