Custom Drupal Site and Database vs Out of the Box System

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

The Association that I work for is currently deciding between adopting an out-of-the-box membership system like iMIS, Avectra, etc or building a custom Drupal site and backend database.

It seems like going the custom route could potentially be a better fit but it doesn't seem like very many Associations are going this route - is there a reason that they're staying away from this option? Having to customize something from the ground up does seem a little daunting.

The main drawbacks to adopting a prebuilt system seem to be the lack of website customization and being subject to whatever upgrades/changes they decide to do.

I'm curious to hear thoughts or experiences on this situation. Thanks a lot!

Do you have an in-house dev team?

If so, then drupal(or anything else open source and free!). I couldn't imaging using an 'out of the box' system for something like this. Talk to the civicrm dev shops, no crm is out of the box ready to meet all an organizations needs.

Depending what they cost, you should consider what your dev time will cost customizing Drupal. I'm willing to wager it will be cheaper, but who knows.
