Membership / Association Website Building

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.
This group should probably have more organizers. See documentation on this recommendation.

Designing and implementing a website for a membership organization can sometimes become challenging. We all strive for the best in us to create the best possible website, but often hit a road block and hoped to find some first class resources from other Drupalers to keep us going.

I am creating this Group with the vision to unite like minded people to share their best practice examples, give tips, provide resources for people looking to create an outstanding membership website.

Some ideas and key components of a well developed membership website should include (please add to the list), but are not limited to:

  • Newsletter Sign Up
  • Different Level Member Registration Forms with Payment Processing
  • Member Center or Account Management for Users
  • Member Networking (Forum, Blog, Messaging, File Upload, Video Sharing, Groups - something a la Drupal Commons - but with Single Sign On)

  • Membership Directory for Public Search (we are actually working on an integrated Google Map View to show front end users the location of the member within their profile - if anyone has done some work in this area or has some good examples, please post)

Back-end:
- Member Management (payment processing, automatic invoicing, automatic renewal reminders, member reports, automatic member upgrade to different member level, etc)

Custom Drupal Site and Database vs Out of the Box System

The Association that I work for is currently deciding between adopting an out-of-the-box membership system like iMIS, Avectra, etc or building a custom Drupal site and backend database.

It seems like going the custom route could potentially be a better fit but it doesn't seem like very many Associations are going this route - is there a reason that they're staying away from this option? Having to customize something from the ground up does seem a little daunting.

Conference Scheduling

Many organizations that hold conferences have a list of their sessions and functions which can be selected and then downloaded as an iCal file to be incorporated into the attendees' calendar programs. Is anyone familiar with how this is done? Is anyone working on incorporating this feature into Drupal based sites?

Thanks
Steven

My return is " drupal_json(array('sample'=>$output)); ". $output contains my html with the search result along with my pagination function. My first page is loading in ajax which is fine for me. But when I click 2 page its redirecting to the ajax path along with the arguments " ?page=1&js=1" . I want this page also loads in the same page in ajax ( with out reloading ) . How can I bring pagination also in the ajax format?

Any associations using drupal commons?

Are there any member associations using Drupal Commons?
We are looking at it, but would like to see a site that has implemented it.
We are a bar association, so another bar would be ideal, but would love to see any examples of professional or other member organizations.
Thanks,
Doug
