just read the READMEs
just read the READMEs carefully. some additional informations can be found in my blog entries at http://more.zites.net/soc
I'm not aware of any further documentation
More documentation is
More documentation is definitely needed.
I don't understand the readmes, and I don't understand how to use usernode/nodeprofile to do what I want. Though the problem is really that I don't understand what usernode/nodeprofile actually do.
My main problem was I trying
My main problem was I trying to get nodeprofile to create a node per user, but it turned out usernode did this. Nodeprofile docs didn't tell me much but when I then stumbled on usernode, it confirmed I was in the right spot.
fago: ya, I did read the site you linked to. but that site has a lot of soc 2006 related discussion which I didn't have time to wade through. When I clicked, for example, nodeprofile, it takes me to the drupal project page. From a drupal project page I look at the "documentation" link.
As a suggestion, I think you could have one new documentation stub here: http://drupal.org/handbook/modules/ and link all three of your related project pages (usernode, nodeprofile, nodefamily) to the same documentation page, and maybe call the page "Node Profile", since that is the name of the package in the .info. If you start this, interested people like me can help flesh it out.
So the usernode handbook page would become a child page of the "Node profile" package page, and we add the other two as new child pages. (If you need any edits that only a d.o maintainer can do, just let me know.)
+1 - Excellent suggestions, as usual, from sime.
I, for one, am having a difficult time understanding how all the pieces fit and work together, so any clear documentation would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.

I figured out usernode,
I figured out usernode, what's confusing me is nodeprofile. I can't work out what the 'use this content type as profile' ticky box actually does. Does it merely tag that content type as being the one nodeprofile should create for users?
I took a look at http://more.zites.net/soc and logged in to the demo, but I don't seem to be able to get that to do anything.
A handbook page would be great, so would some simple recipes for the common things people want to do.
'I figured out usernode,
'I figured out usernode, what's confusing me is nodeprofile. '
Ok, maybe that's the wrong way round.
I understand the automatic node-per-person creator.
I don't get the other one.
Ya, you got it the right way
Ya, you got it the right way around ;-)
the demo is working again.
the demo is working again. It was broken due to a module update...
Yes, I see the need for more
Yes, I see the need for more documentation. Apparently the READMEs are not enough for a lot of people. I think the problem is that there are many ways how the package could be used as it's quite flexible.
What would be needed is documentation a good step by step documentation like I tried to provide with the part "How to build a user profile with this stuff?" in the nodeprofile README. But perhaps both approaches should be make more complete.
However, my problem is that I've currently not the time for writing all this (and obviously I hadn't it yet since soc). Instead I plan working on nodeprofile 2.0 which will be easier to use, indeed I've already made the first steps into this direction with the recent pageroute 5.x development I did. But there's a lot more to do and I'm working on other things too, so please be patient.
In the meanwhile I would be very happy if someone could step in and explain the modules to the people. Unfortunately the drupal handbooks are always only editable by one user (or?), so I need one that takes over this.. Of course I would be happy to provide input and create all necessary pointers to the docs.
The handbook remains
The handbook remains editable by you if you go to node/#/edit. You just don't see the tabs normally. So, as long as a maintainer doesn't change the filter type to "full html" you can still edit.
I'll take your response as an OK for me to start organizing your pages? ;-) Certainly you talk about "many ways to configure" so with the handbook you could have child pages that describe use-cases.
PS. No criticism was meant, you probably weren't aware that people look at nodeprofile and wonder why they can't make it do a usernode, and then we think that nodefamily might be key, which really confuses things.
great!
of course, just start! I'm glad to see somebody helping me with this!
Feel free to ask me any questions, if something comes up. Just mail or I'm often in #drupal, nick fago.
I've actually got a rough
I've actually got a rough draft of a step by step "this is how to set up a user profile" with all the various modules. The only thing is I've been waiting to go through and update it for 5.x since I've only set up profiles this way for 4.7 thus far and it's still pretty rough because even I get confused on what exactly each module is doing.
hm
hm, strange.. I don't think it's so confusing
nodeprofile: mark content types as profiles
nodefamily: needed by nodeprofile, allows you to extend profiles with other content-types
pageroute: build an easy usable UI for creating/editing/viewing profiles
usernode: Not necessary, but may be useful in particular in conjunction with views. Or as public user-page for show multiple node-profiles
I've just improved the
I've just improved the README, hopefully that helps.
Updated README for 5.x:

for 4.7.x:

Thanks - every bit helps!
Your modules sound very useful and I plan on trying them out soon.
Thanks for all your SOC work!!! The Drupal community appreciates your contributions.
