Asheville is a really awesome city. I don't know the status of the job market, but I do know there is a small concentration of Drupalers a hour or so North of Asheville, in Boone, NC. Most of Asheville's economy is centered around tourism; most of the techy jobs are 4-5 hours East of there in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area. However, there are three Universities within an hour or so (Western Carolina University, UNC Asheville, and Appalachian State).
Hi, Nick. I'm one of the Boone Drupalers Sheena mentioned. Many universities in the state (Appalachian State University, Duke, UNC-Charlotte and maybe more) have adopted Drupal; however, there is basically a hiring freeze on state jobs right now, so jobs at those public universities will be scarce. There's also a contingency of Drupalers in the Charlotte area as well, but that area is more a financial hub. There is at least one Drupal shop in Asheville: http://www.hotdrupal.com

I grew up in Orlando and became disgusted with the crime and overpriced everything, moving to Asheville was the best thing I ever did. I have been here almost two years now and each day has been better than the one before it! If you like a culturally creative lifestyle you will love Asheville ... its not pretentious at all and the nature is undeniably amazing, its so lush here, you wouldnt guess it but its the closest thing to the rain forest you will find in the continental US.
Although I do not advertise my services (& never have) I have found more than enough work to keep quite busy. I'm working on 13 sites at the moment with more in the pipeline. You sort of have to find us through the rabbit hole but in 2010 we will go a bit more public with our services as well as begin looking to hire some drupal developers and graphic folks as some of our projects are turning out to be quite intensive.
Good luck on your hunt, hopefully you will choose Asheville if its a good fit for you. You should come check it out sometime .. be forewarned though as our community is quite good at scaring away certain folks of lets say delicate constitutions, or radical rightwingers because they hate to be the ultra minority!

Just wanted to add that I host my dedicated server with Holistic Solutions or also known as HotDrupal as jpmcneal mentioned above. The owner Steve is a great guy and his company does fantastic work, might be worth talking to them as they could be hiring.
I will be posting here first (of course) when we decide to start hiring, hopefully in the first quarter of 2010. I'm already working around the clock and simply cant wait to expand the team. There is an abundance of work here in Asheville but its not always apparent or even advertised, we tend to let things happen more organically. I dunno maybe its something in the air, you'll notice it when you visit... its almost like instant synchronicity. Come with a clear heart and open mind and things will just connect for you all over the place, its almost spooky.

Hope that helps a little.
Thank you Sheena, that is
Thank you Sheena, that is very helpful. I'm definitely investigating the Raleigh area too, where I'd likely find more job opportunities.
Thanks again.

Plenty of room and the job market is great comparatively
