Are there any Drupal developers in Hawaii? I've recently moved out to Oahu and would like to get some Drupal meet-ups together so I started this group. I'm working with the great folks over at ChipIn.com and we've got lots (too much, in fact!) of interesting Drupal projects in the pipeline.

Hello!

tm@drupal.org's picture

Welcome to Hawaii!

Well, good to have an "expert" in Hawaii. I am a sysadmin in a State department, and am only at the "smashing pieces together and try to make it work" stage, no coding (not a coder at all). I try to relay my experiences (or the lack thereof!).

BTW, saw the Big Ideas @ Berkeley post; that you?

hey, not so much a developer as a ex-web head that is now using Drupal to run a site or two. Am also looking for a local resource to help with our projects so let me know how I might best do that.

I live and work on the Big Island at Hawaii Preparatory Academy. I have built a few Drupal websites, but HPA's was my first.

On Oahu

I've been using Drupal for a while now. And we've just started projects to upgrade our website - www.hecouncil.org and we are taking a serious look at CiviCRM. Any info regarding CiviCRM is greatly appreciated.

Hellow from the Big Island

I just want to introduce myself. I'm on the Big Island and have developed a few sites on Drupal. I'd like to connect with other Drupal people in Hawaii to share ideas and maybe help generate work. Anyone out there?

Drupalist Seriously thinking of relocating...

jeffrey.dalton's picture

Aloha drupal folk,
I run a small Acquia Partner Drupal consulting business and have been working with some solid large corporate clients as of late. Seriously considering relocating my family to Hawaii. I have lived all over mainland from NY to Washington state and then spent some time on the big island last year and realized Hawaiian island presence and culture and sense of community could truly be home for us. I would be very interested in connecting with drupal folks there both for business and personal contacts. If interested, I invite you to check out my work http://www.jeffreydalton.info and drop me a line.
Peace,

Hi Jeffrey --

monicadear's picture

We did this exact thing and it has been very good-- we were originally based in Oakland and still maintain our ties to the SF Bay Area.

There may be some struggle involved with physically moving your family -- it was difficult for us-- but in the long run transplanting the children here has been the right decision in terms of the focus on family, cultural heritage, very diverse environment, safety, and pan-Pacific outlook.

Would love to talk more if you're interested. We run a fair number of Drupal installations and are always looking for good designers.

Thanks,

Hey Monica

jeffrey.dalton's picture

I had forgotten about this post until I got pinged with your reply. :) We sold everything and moved to the Big Island in a town called Honokaa about 2 weeks ago. Has been simply wonderful. My family is loving the island and we already feel we have more community than anyone could hope for. This place is truly magical and powerful place to be.

Would be happy to chat about future projects if something should turn up. I am booked pretty solid for the next couple months. I tend to plan projects in 2-3 month cycles. Let's connect through email when you get some time.

Aloha,
Jeffrey

I was born in the island, and my wife's family is all on Oahu.

I've been toying w/ the idea of moving back but having just spent 5 years building up business/contacts in Washington state, wondering about how another move would affect that. I have a few clients outside of washington state, but most of my business comes from referrals or leads from user groups.

I've often visit for extended stays (just wrapping up a 3 week trip) in which I do work remotely, but its for mainland clients.

Wondering if any of you do freelance, and if so what the opps are for business development.

I'm gonna be visiting

Drupal beers Oahu

pauntly's picture

Cheers Ian,

And if any other Drupal fans are around next week on Oahu and fancy an informal beer please chime in :)

My client is looking at putting together a community site for remodeling projects. I know, it's been done. I saw HomeSavvi (I think it's called), which is a drupal site that does the same sort of thing - looks great.

The site would essentially allow people to post active projects and search for local contractors and suppliers, and provide the usual feedback and referral mechanisms. So we need role based functionality, nice profile pages, organic groups and location based searches, all that sort of thing.

So it seems that Drupal has great modules for those kinds of things, and I have no desire to reinvent the wheel, and would like to keep development costs down for the client.

I'm a pretty seasoned developer in .net, java, rails, php etc, but this is my first Drupal experiment, so right now I'm neck deep in all the different available modules - there seem to be many ways to skin the same cat :)

So far it looks like I need contentProfile, OrganicGroups, Views, Location, GMap, User Relationships and a bunch of others. Making it all play nice is the struggle so far as well as navigating the landscape of whats available and the 'right' way to do things. It's quite a departure for me since it's replacing programming effort with configuration effort.

Ian just ping me when you're around and we can take it from there.

Thanks!
Paul

I'd have to say that's some pretty complex functionality your trying to build as a first Drupal project. I'm sure you'll enjoy the challenge! Looking forward to tracking the progress.

Looking Any Opportunity

rodoard's picture

I am from SFO Bay Area, always dreaming about what's on the other shore,...

I have had a few brief successful experiences developing drupal modules; the centerpiece, yet another multiple image flash upload module for D5, heavily customized, along with a few others

I would be interested in pursuing opportunities to build on that experience

I am all over the place as it were, doing a little bit of Groovy, a touch of Ruby on Rails, and some Flex

Website developer, want to get more involved

Hi everyone and intros --

We were predominantly based in the SF Bay Area and recently physically moved to Molokai although the bulk of our work is still mainland based.

We do Drupal, Joomla, OS Commerce, Wordpress and custom content management systems... this is our 5th year in business.

We'd like to connect with others as well to exchange tips and share knowledge.

Thanks,

Wishing I Was There

ian.d.rossi's picture

Hi Monica,

It's great to see you joining the community. I have some friends on Oahu and visited them there for a couple of weeks in March. I would love to be there but there doesn't seem to be an opportunity at the moment.

How is your experience with Drupal? Do you find that you do more Drupal installs than Joomla? What reasons do people have for still choosing Joomla over Drupal? I've always been interested in this subject.

I've built a SaaS product based on an open source project called vtiger. I use Drupal for the company website. I make use of a slew of modules, including:

  • SEO Checklist (yup, for SEO)
  • Advanced Forum (for our user Forums)
  • GeSHi filter (for diplaying code in help sections)
  • Mail Editor (for modifying forum notifications)
  • AddToAny (for bookmarking)
  • FCKeditor (for rich text editing)
  • IMCE (for image uploads)
  • Lightbox2 (image display)
  • Mollom (spam protection)
  • Webform (for customer signups)
  • Panels
  • Views
  • Google Analytics
  • Token
  • Twitter
  • Taxonomy
  • Subscriptions

I've customized the Acquia Marina theme to my own liking and added some custom javascript to avoid multiple clicks on submit buttons that perform important operations that shouldn't be repeated. I've also done a lot of advanced work with the Webform module. I do a lot of additional validation and additional processing using external PHP scripts.

Let me know if you have any Drupal questions and I'll be glad to help out.

Kind regards,

Ian D. Rossi

User Relationship vs. Friendslist

monicadear's picture

Ian, Jeff - would love your feedback on integrating either of the two API's into your social networking sites, if any.

We have an upcoming project where the client wants to do both a "followers" relationship (a la Twitter) as well as a "friends" relationship (a la Facebook) on the same website. I'm always nervous about multiple modules competing with one another -- thoughts?

Hey Monica

jeffrey.dalton's picture

I would recommend taking a look at the Gigya Socialize module as it integrates the site with a handful of social networking APIs and adds some powerful features for users in a drupal site: http://drupal.org/project/gigya

Here is a video showing how to install and use it: http://acquia.com/community/resources/acquia-tv/extend-your-community-ac...

DrupalCamp Hawaii

monicadear's picture

Would anyone here be interested in organizing a weekend DrupalCamp to meet up, connect, do some show and tell and share knowledge?

I would love to connect with others on Oahu, Maui, Big Island who are actively developing Drupal sites as well as other web designers and web developers... I'm on Molokai. I think we could form a hui to do some charitable work with nonprofits who can definitely benefit from the tools available in Drupal.

Interested? Please let me know by responding here. I'm thinking this would be good for summer 2010.

This is the Kanu group I'm working with to find out other green web designers and developers:

I too would love to connect with other Drupal people in Hawaii. Summer 2010 sounds great!

I'm based on the Big Island and work remotely for a company in Santa Clara, CA. I do Drupal sites and also design software interfaces using MS Expression Blend. I do some freelance work also.

Cheers,

Aloha! I just moved back to

j3sika's picture

Aloha! I just moved back to Oahu, and am looking for some work. I have become pretty familiar with Drupal through trial and error and Drupalcamps/Drupalcon and would love to work and learn more with someone who is more advanced then myself. I love CSS and design work but struggle a bit with the development part.

Let me know if anyone would be interested in meeting up and connecting, or if anyone has any extra work.
Cheers Jess

house on oahu / drupal exchange

bethonoahu's picture

I just discovered this Oahu group and also just learned about Drupal.

I hope this doesn't sound off the subject, but I see a number of people mentioning an interest in moving to Hawaii, or visiting here. I have a house in Manoa Valley on the island of Oahu that is going to be available over the holidays for about 4 weeks (Dec 21- Jan 18) while I am traveling in New York. It's a very nice house, about ten minutes drive from the beach.

I am also interested in learning more about Drupal, and possibly hiring someone locally to help me set up a website using Drupal in the new year after I return. (Monica I am especially interested in connecting with you as this would absolutely be a green project. And I'm encouraged to hear you are connected with Kanu Hawaii- some great people there.)

In the meantime though I would love to offer my house to someone in the Drupal community over the holidays. I couldn't offer it for free unfortunately but would give a great break to someone coming here to work on a Drupal project, form a Drupal hui or Drupal Camp, or who might be able to coach me in using Drupal after I return, or just someone interested in helping to grow the talent here in Hawaii.

Does this pique anyone's interest? Contact Beth at bmcd50@hawaiiantel.net if so. I am happy to send some photos of the house.

Coming Home for the Holidays

kanani's picture

wow! a fellow Drupaler from Molokai, it is a small small world. I was born there in 74, unfortunately my folks moved back to the mainland a few years later so I don't remember much from that time. Although my wife and I did go back and visit the treehouse about 5 years ago.

Speaking of family, I'll be on Oahu (staying in Manoa actually) Dec 16th through the 1st. Mostly there to see family but it would be cool if we could have a Drupal meetup while I'm there. I know this can be difficult with all the holiday plans, but it doesn't need to be real formal.

malasada's anyone?

-dave

Manoa / meetup

bethonoahu's picture

Hey Dave. I'm always up for malasadas, but don't think I'd be able to participate in a Drupal meetup during the time you mention as I take off on Monday the 21st and am booked with family and holiday events pretty solid up until that time.

I hope you can round up some others though. I would love to see the Drupal community grow in Hawai`i.

Assume you're talking about Monica on Molokai. I grew up here in Manoa. A bustling metropolis compared to Moloka`i!

I'd be down to do a drupal meet up.

jn325's picture

Ill be here all through the holidays. I am a student here and so I have a free schedule. What do you have in mind?

@joshontheweb

kanani's picture

I was thinking coffee or beers, depending on number of folks interested, age groups, etc. I'd be depending on someone local to come up with a venue recommend.

DrupalHawaii.com is coming! Soon!

monicadear's picture

To keep you updated, I've reserved the domain name http://www.DrupalHawaii.com, and the good folks Michael Haag and Kyle McKay at Acquia are working hard to give us a server --- they have not yet allocated a server to community groups yet but they're working on rolling that out --- and this is a charitable donation so make sure to support Acquia and their fine distribution: http://www.acquia.com

EDIT: We are online! through http://www.DrupalHawaii.com
Please post a little bit about yourself in the Comments section until we get member profiles enabled.

To give you a sense of how I'm thinking to organize the site, I will invite you all to post your own Drupal Hawaii listing with your contact details, the types of work you like to do (that is, installation and customization, themeing, consulting, custom module development, etc.) and some samples of Drupal sites you've worked on and your specific role.

What would be helpful to our community? I'm thinking we also offer a members-only "tips" or "lessons learned" section as well as a way to post job leads and referrals. We could also offer a public-accessible set of case studies or other ways to encourage our Hawaii community groups and businesses to understand Drupal as a potential solution.

I'm thinking membership would be free but we might be able offer advertising, corporate support, or tickets to pay for camps or get-togethers or summits or whatnot.

Ideas? Thoughts? please message me.

Thanks,
Monica/10K Webdesign
