If you're an independent musician or run a label looking for new music check out http://staging.instatone.com (temporary staging URL). We are testing this new Drupal-based community radio station. We are based in Portland and looking for funding.
It is kinda like hot or not for music acts. If you vote it up the DJ-free radio plays a lot and vice versa. You can change your vote anytime so basically the community 'controls' the airwaves for the first time. There are a lot of known issues with the navigation but otherwise it seems to be actually working -- lots of members joining in last few days.
How it works - You create a band then upload your tracks. You can create profiles for your bands and yourself. You get recommended tracks based on your votings kinda like netflix or amazon. You can have as many bands per member as you want and as many songs as you want. We generate a top 40 and 'songs on the rise' top charts and it has a bit of social networking as well thrown in for fun.
How to help - to support us and local bands, we are looking for funding, feedback, and volunteers. We want to convert the radio and playlist generator to Flash asap to make more of an integrated experience, and also change the voting mechanism a bit so you don't have to hit submit when rolling over the five stars. Any volunteers? That way the stream doesn't play over the flash ondemand player from the audio module. If you are a developer group looking to help but need commitment to the company 'post-funding' that can probably be considered too.:)
Our goal is to create the #1 community-driven radio station in the world and have it be entertaining, then open up people's minds to the possibility of going outside their genre to listen to other music.
Thanks to the many developers who have already worked on this project over the years. It's getting there...and all the labels who have already found talent on our site since we did alpha!
