User group meeting

It is that time again, first social of March.

I am going to try to make it for first social each month and probably some of the seconds. Believe we had a errrrr very small attendance last time around.

Tom and I both met someone at DrupalCamp who could offer us an interesting venue to hold an event (possibly even a day) I have to chase up a little but more details tomorrow. If we have enough energy and few people prepared to pitch in with talks etc Could be a step up from what we have done previously but probably not quite a Bristol DrupalCamp yet!

I am going to start waving the Drupal 8 flag for all those interested, working on a project or two myself and want to start sharing and learning so tomorrow, low level start but if anybody want an intro to installing, looking around the admin, configuration (install profiles are going to be mega easier etc.) then I will be happy to oblige.

Looking forward to meeting up with someone/s tomorrow (I have a book just in case ;)).

Usual time and place:
at the Llandoger Trow

sorry for Hijacking this post but....

In 39 days I will be running the London Marathon in a suit of armor to raise money and awareness for my charity Debra https://www.debra.org.uk

I will be running over 26 miles in this suit of armor and this is going to be extremely difficult but is nothing compared to what these people have to go through every day.

This is the first time I have every run a marathon and so that makes this a massive challenge for me.

I am trying to raise £3,500 and still have over £2,500 to go and https://www.justgiving.com/Mike-Dodd4/

I am running for this charity as my Niece Hannah (age 16) suffers with EB?

What is EB?

Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a group of genetic disorders that result in fragility of the skin and, in some cases, other internal membranes and organs. Blisters, open wounds and sores form as a result of the slightest touch, rub or trauma.

Certain types of EB can be fatal in infancy and others are severely life-limiting. We estimate that there more than 5,000 people with EB in the UK, and 500,000 worldwide.

Best Regards

Very quick summary

chris_hall_hu_cheng's picture

Good attendance from the Microserve massive + Tom and myself.

Had a lively discussion about estimating and quoting Drupal project, basic conclusion seemed to be Agile is best with a cost window (if you can sign them up for that) but if fixed cost make sure to nail down the details particular in respect to what the Drupal modules you intend to use can do (that extra 5 - 10% of functionality that looked easy early on can really hurt). Mention was made of my uncharacteristic outburst during questions at one of the Drupalcamp London talks.

I promoted the idea of Chromebooks (so long as you know what you are getting), great for quick web related stuff, and you can ssh to external dev server, store files etc. Particularly easy to enable text to speech and listen to your webpages for accessibility testing.

General discussion about Drupal 8, I ran through a quick install and a few of us discussed config improvements, fieldable blocks etc. There was a view that anybody who fully groks D8 and D7 at the magic moment it becomes viable for production is going to cash in for a period (kerching!!).

Some moaning about the more nefarious practices of some recruitment consultants.

We are actively pursuing a potential offer of some conference space, possibly going to go for a D8 themed day of talks etc. (other suggestions welcome).

The twitter account is slowly gaining in momentum, please take to time to encourage devs. and digital agencies based locally who are not following to follow.

Mike Dodd is going to be running a Marathon in a suit of Armour for a good cause and I am sure he would appreciate some sponsorship, see comment above.

Mike also had a concept site in mind which would allow people to find hookers and drug dealers by location price and service, we discussed a few implementation details, I think it was a thought exercise only but either way I am not going to argue with a giant who is planning to run a marathon in 4.5 hours in a suit of Armour...

Finally we had a Apple vs Everything else war, made me feel very nostalgic ("jumpers for goal posts and all that") conclusion being we could probably by non Apple kit powerful enough to fully emulate any Apple kit at a particular price point (but it would weigh more and have ugly square corners).

More stuff may have happened after I left .....*

Impressive

A fantastic summary to be sure. I feel like I was there. I wish I was there...

Thanks Chris.

It was good to see everyone

It was good to see everyone yesterday, and thanks Chris for organising and for the excellent summary.

We mostly continued the Apple vs. The World discussion after you escaped.
