how to check that drush make file is up to date?

Hi all - is there any good way to check that my drush make file is up to date before I run the drush make command to create a new platform? Could I use this https://drupal.org/project/makefile_extra and if so how would I install it in BOA?

It is not maintained properly if this critical bug is not fixed after 10 months (!) https://drupal.org/node/2006762 -- so no, we will not include it by default.
